I've seen this graph floating around for years, but it literally makes no sense.

How do they judge the scientific advancement here?

Rome was pretty based.

That graph is the reason i dont trust science.

Science is literally the most dangerous thing humanity ever invented and earth would be such a better place if we never got into the whole thing.

1.
Most reputable Mideivel historians accept that there was a painful restructuring period after the fall of the WRE, and there were periods of war and disease , but generally speaking it was a relatively peaceful time, where wealth accumulated over the course of generations, art arcitecture metallurgy weapons and military tactics were being developed, and modern cities began to dot Europe.

Library of Alexandria survived the so called "Dark Ages" until it was taken over by Muzzies.

Ancient writings were secured by northern monks during the "dark ages"

"Ancient and modern sources identify four possible occasions for the partial or complete destruction of the Library of Alexandria: Julius Caesar's fire during his civil war in 48 BC; the attack of Aurelian in AD 270 – 275; the decree of Coptic Patriarch Theophilus in 391 AD; and the Muslim conquest of Egypt"
>>
>>69438221

The cause of this "Dark Age" was the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the waves of invasions and raiding that followed it. Without the larger economy and administrative infrastructure of the Empire to sustain them, trade systems, large public works and educational systems all collapsed, contracted into local versions or died out in western Europe. And waves of invasions by various Germanic peoples, Avars, Moors, Magyars and Vikings made mere survival a higher priority than things like preserving books or maintaining road systems.

The idea that Christianity caused or significantly contributed to the fall of the Western Empire has long since been rejected by modern historians. It clearly wasn't a significant factor, since while the Western Empire collapsed, the equally (or even more) Christian Eastern Empire continued for another 1000 years without collapsing and without any "Dark Age".

Listen tooth paste, the Library was always upkeot to some capacity even after the original destruction

In AD 642, Alexandria was captured by the Muslim army of Amr ibn al `Aas. Several later Arabic sources describe the library's destruction by the order of Caliph Omar.[38][39] Bar-Hebraeus, writing in the 13th century, quotes Omar as saying to Yaḥyā al-Naḥwī: "If those books are in agreement with the Quran, we have no need of them; and if these are opposed to the Quran, destroy them."[40] Later scholars are skeptical of these stories, given the range of time that had passed before they were written down and the political motivations of the various writers.[41][42][43][44][45]

Ugh... Implying there was anything remotely approaching what would pass for science going on in the ancient world...

Sure, there were great thinkers, philosophers, orators, etc., even passable engineers, but very little in the way of the scientific method going on in ancient Rome. Also, as much as I'd love slaves, the abundance of slaves in the ancient world precluded the advancement of technology to a significant degree, e.g., Romans had invented very rudimentary steam engines, but really who gives a fuck when you just have slaves lift the gate by hand.

Also, the unitless graph of arbitrary advancement is presumably bait to begin with.

Galileo was put under house arrest for basically calling the Pope a retard in Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. Prior to that he was struggling to prove his ideas about heliocentrism against Brahe's argument that the stars would have to be really far away and also enormous, bigger even than the sun, for Galileo's ideas to be possible. Because Galileo could not prove that his ideas were correct (he lacked evidence) they were eventually dismissed. The Inquisition's proclamation that his ideas were heretical came from the fact that many scholars repeatedly asked Galileo not to teach his opinion regarding heliocentrism if he could not prove it, and he ignored them because he was autistic. Even though he was kind of right, he didn't have any evidence yet tried to teach his view as if it were fact.

Of course all of them were utter retards, because the stars are indeed really far away and bigger than the sun, but the fact remains that no one really had any evidence. It was very much a scientific quagmire, not a religious one.

The pope even kindly asked Galileo to assemble a book giving arguments both for and against heliocentrism, just as long as Galileo didn't explicitly advocate heliocentrism as the one true model. That is when Galileo wrote the Dialogue and ended up autistically pissing off the Pope, because he wrote the Pope in as "Simplicio" and was surprised when the man was offended

Read the post. Galileo had been engaged in scientific discussion for many years and could not prove what he was espousing. He was literally peddling what was at the time pseudoscience. It would be as if Deepak Chopra guessed correctly about the existence of the Higgs Boson and wrote a long mystical book about it, ascribing it properties it doesn't even have, and spouting off about it as if it's fact.

In hindsight, yeah, we know the sun is at the center of our solar system. Galileo didn't actually know that for sure at the time, without calculus and the theory of gravitation it was just a crackpot theory.

You're clearly just pissed off at the church and want to ignore the fact that thousands of philosophers and scholars were encouraged and funded by the church and that universities were built across Europe at this time to encourage scientific advancement

Rome fell in the 19th century when the Holy Roman Empire vanished. Before the HRE, you still had Eastern Rome. The HRE was the legal and spiritual continuation of the ancient Roman empire (translatio imperii). Yes, that means that the Roman Empire ruled Europe for around 2000 years.

The "Dark Ages" weren't even bad, they're just called that way because we don't have many first hand sources about the time, leaving it "in the dark".

Christianity in fact stopped the Jewish domination of Rome. Before Constantine, the Jews had several special rights and privileges in pagan Rome since Judaism was considered a religion licita. That's why they tried to destroy Roman Christianity, they foresaw how it would end up: Nero's wife was a philosemite, that's why Nero persecuted Christians.

From the invention of agriculture up until industrialization, there was really no change in the life of a peasant. There was no growth; virtually all wealth came from heavy taxation of farmers, and it was a zero-sum game, leading into endless wars of conquest to get more land from others. Who ruled who was the main point of writing history; not how the life of the common man became different, because it didn't, for thousands of years.

Charlemagne became the sole legal and spritual heir of the Romans, thus the HRE was the continuation of the Roman Empire. This isn't debatable.

And actually, it was pretty Roman even before the HRE was created: Everywhere the Romans went, they left their culture, judicial system etc. Since those worked better than the Celto-Germanic ones, the conquered people used them. For example, the Merovingians were pretty mediterranean in culture.

If you haven't noticed, the calendar which we use is the Gregorian Calendar, which was introduced by a pope in the 19th century. The Gregorian Calendar is the predominate civil calendar in the entire Western world, and it also happened to be created solely for the calculation of which date Easter should fall on. By all means, seeing how much you hate the oppressive Christian system, nobody is stopping you from using the Chinese Lunar Calendar in which 2016 would be the year of the Wood Goat 4712 or Unix time, in which 2016 becomes somewhere between 1451606400 and 1483228799. Both of these are completely secular and rely on their own methods for calculating time. Islam and Judaism both use their own calendars, but the fact remains that the current Christian one is the most used on Earth. I digress, but there is absolutely every reason to use Christ as the central reference date in a civil calendar which made by Christians, for Christians. In fact, it makes considerably less sense for scientists to insist on using BCE and CE, because the notion that the "Common Era" or the "Christian Era" immediately began with Christ's birth is absurd.

Like I said, the Gregorian Calendar and the Late Julian Calendar were almost purely designed around important feast dates and public holidays regarding saints and the life of Christ. The sole reason why it's so widely used is because the Western world has become such a huge centre of trade and culture, that it simply forces other people to adopt the same calendar lest they fall into the dustbin of irrelevance. However, like I said, devout Muslims and Jews still use their same old calendars, so your point about it being "offensive" to other religions and cultures simply falls flat. A calendar is just a calendar.

Some history fag can fill me in:

While sometimes the church is blamed for the spiritual darkness of the Dark Ages, in many ways it was the only light, no matter how dim, that shone in the darkness of surrounding barbarism and heathenism. During this time it was the priests and the monks that saved from the ruins of the Roman Empire the treasures of classical literature—along with the Holy Scriptures and patristic writings—and preserved them for the future.
>>
>>69442948
Again, you're using technological advancements in your arguments.

Of course the distance would have stopped them. The point is, the technology to conquer the world has only existed recently. It wasn't there when other super powers were in power. Just like there's no way we could conquer another planet right now.

Mongolians

those mongrels were the most powerful force on the planet and they focused their barbarism on the Chinese the most. Chinese tech level fluctuated all over their territories, but it obviously suffered greatly due to all this. China still hasn't fully recovered as they had to fight for hundreds of years to regain their country into what we see today which is very impressive for them. they are quite slow to rebuild however because they took the economic route instead of the route Americans and Russians took(indulge in science for the sake of having a stronger military).

basically there is truth to OP; basically Muslims were the most powerful WESTERN force on the planet and their crusades fucked over whites so hard that they had to cling to their religion in an attempt to band more of them together. many developed kingdoms collapsed and fell during these chaotic times and they took the strategy of religious warfare. the Muslims were focused on their religious crusade for hundreds of years already so this was nearly fruitless to do so but whites were obviously desperate. whites were so paranoid and now adamant on their new strategy that they rejected everything else which is why Western tech level started going backwards. Muslims were focused in Africa as well so they weren't forcing themselves 100% against whites which allowed whites to become stronger as a religious military.

the whole world was dark at this time, the Chinese fucked simply by war enacted for conquering, and the whites fucked over religious beliefs.

The slowdown was due to the fucking roman empire leaving a mess behind its ruins, barbarians settling down and countries reforming.
If anything Christianity is to praise for the promotion of the first education system, diffusion of knowledge by hand copying of books before the press and diffusion of arts and culture.
And don't forget to kiss the ground of your local church for the Inquisition and the Crusades removing kebab from europe.

It doesn't even matter. You could have been raised on base 64 and you'd be saying the same thing. It's just a different way of representing units.
>>
>>69444829
Base 64 has its uses.

I've never seen anyone use BCE/CE in my life. Not in my college textbooks, not any regular person, not even Wikipedia seems to use it.

Isn't it funny it means "common era" too? How is 2,016 years ago defined as the common era? It's like fedora fags invented something to avoid using BC/AD, but didn't have the balls to take it to its logical conclusion and change the year as well.

>Yeah, and if I call the pope a retarded or disregard the catholic church's "scientific proof" I should be prosecuted?

in a time period where everyone, including gallileo, believed in god, and catholics, including gallileo, believed the pope his infallible vicar? yeah, probably.

seriously you're a fucking retard if that's teh best you can do. you realise this was some centuries ago don't you?

i mean, they didn't have cellphones and gender queer furrykin, guess they're not scientifically progressive because of that either.

You're a fucking autistic sperg who didn't even read the fucking comment you replied to.

What are "units" of scientific advancement? This is all subjective.

For example, during the "dark ages" agricultural techniques were far superior to what we had during Roman times. We also had far better metallurgy, as evidenced by the knights, armor, longswords....etc. Before that time, the longest you could build a sword without risking it breaking or chipping every 2 seconds was the size of a Roman gladius, about the length of a forearm.

All sorts of shit like this. The claim that 90% of scientific progress just dried up overnight is just idiotic. Our biggest loss of scientific progress occurred when Muslims burned down the Library of Alexandria

using their calanders is insulting to christians.

>and proclaims that Jesus for sure was the son of God, which hasn't been proven.

so you're not actually a christian.

Are you trying to push someone who lived during the Renaissance back to the 'Dark Ages'.

That's a little disingenuous of you.
>>
>>69438845
Scientific advancement is not a product of society, it's a product of biology.

If you have a high IQ society, you have scientific breakthroughs. If you have a bunch of low IQ's you have nothing.

IQ's in Africa are on average around 67, their brains are 10% smaller than the average European. No science. No technology. They literally never got beyond spears and huts.

Meanwhile in the Renaissance, thanks to the careful eugenic breeding of the noble classes, we got a crop of some of the most powerful thinkers in all of history. The Eugenic influence of Christian society on brainpower, and thus scientific advancement cannot be understated.

being a 19yo atheist doesnt change the history of the west though, is it upsetting to know everything you grew up to know and love is because of thousands of years of Christian dominance?

Christianity is based on faith not proof. Any Christian will tell you that. We shouldn't dictate life based on the faith of any religion, that's unwise. A flawed consensus based on rational thinking is better than hoping that you picked the right one (if organized religion even has a right one...).
>>
>>69437051
I love how this graph implies that we aren't as advanced as we could because of "Christian dark ages" (also thats bullshit as fuck this guy knows whats up >>69437661 )
But it also implies that "Christian countries" are the only ones actually contributed to the technological development. I wonder why the religion of piece couldn't invent all those things ;^)
>>
>>69445496
I'm not an atheist.

You probably find it upsetting when you see a muslim woman wearing a hijab, so hypocrisy isn't really the right tact.

Greece alone went through three dark ages in antiquity. Nobody is saying it's a myth. People are saying it's wrong to pretend there was only one dark age, and that Christianity was responsible.
>>
>>69445573

If Christianity wasn't based of solid proof(Resurrection of Jesus) it would have died in max. 300 years faggot.

Nobody had interests in moving the stone, neither the jews ( they surely wanted him to stay in that place since they wanted him dead) or the romans.

Also christianity is not "hoping that you picked the right one".

Well, obviously because the backwards and violent whites/christians stole it from them, and then magically made the knowledge and everything used to attain it disappear from their society, because we all know backwards and violent people who can't come up with the simplest technology on their own play thousand-year long con games. Shitlord.
