Russia had some of the greatest literature of the 19th century and basically invented the modern novel. The only good books that came out of there after the revolution were ones that were critical of the regime.

Plus, the workers initially were not treated like slaves but after Lenin died and Stalin began taking the reigns pretty much everyone was a slave. They earned very little money and the little money they earned couldn't really buy anything, cause commercialism was a capitalist view.
Also, peasants were still oppressed by the communists and were often killed because they only just missed the grain quota. Living standards went down because of the 5 year plans and people who had ancestors who were even mildly well off were often killed.
The whole idea of Communism also doesn't work because you need a figurehead to rule and that goes against the whole idea of communism. Yes, society was meant to become self-sufficient under communism and as such no leader would be needed, but human nature dictates that people are greedy and have a lust for power. In order for the communist idea to work, human nature it self would have to change and then, well, it is no longer human nature.
