The idea is that groups, or communities, of a few hundred band together to live and defend what they have. There is no formal government and these people are all willing to share what they have in exchange for safety in the masses. Would only work in tribal/village societies, agrarian, virtually no economy to speak of beyond feeding themselves.

A system like this also really can't live for that long as you can get small revolutions brewing up with disgruntled workers. In order to keep revolutions from coming you would need to give everyone a job so they could buy food, this is cheaper than a welfare net because in a corporate dictatorship practically no taxes are paid to the "government".
The sci-fi game Eve Online has a good rendition of this, google the "Caldari State". It's a loose state of all the most rich and powerful megacorporations.
