Refinanced to 10 years at 2.81% after furnishing my house and buying a vehicle (I obtained a job paying over 150k a year out of college, first big boy job off the family farm), which I'll pay a total of about 31k in interest on over the life of the loan. like 265k total.

I was taught how to do basic taxes in high school. It was in 11th grade.
I was taught the basics of compound interest, and why it was important to start saving as early as possible, as the interest on interest is where money is made, and how rich people stay rich.
As for mortgages, I don't think we learned about mortgages specifically, but we did learn about credit card debt and the dangers therein.
I was an accounting major in college, so of course I learned it all in college.

To be fair, personal responsibility is doing what you know you need to take care of yourself, not necessarily knowing what that entails.

That said, we do a very poor job of preparing students for adult life in general, hence the amount of debtcuck grads with useless degrees. The real problem with the US education system is that its awfully fragmented: some counties are great, others are terrible in setting curricula, and even then some schools are better than others in those counties. The curricula is set by local school boards, with often times very loose state guidelines.
To be frank, incompetent politicians have no place in setting education standards. The way we teach our kids should be evidence based and not based on muh feelings, but it should be flexible to allow for experimentation.
This problem is augmented by the fact that public education is largely inflexible on what school you get to go to, with great students in shitty neighborhoods locked into shitty schools. It again varies state by state, so its hard to generalize.
