As long as we are thinking of serial killers who are somewhat intelligent and commit pre meditated murder i dont think its that much harder to get away with murder than it was before that flashy forensics science. Forensics isnt some mystical thing that only a few law enforcement know about, serial killers can take steps to protect themselves from forensics if they are actually planning out their murders carefully. A lot of times forensics is not even what catches a serial killer, its a target escaping and telling the police, the forensics is just the cherry on top of the mountain of evidence used in court.
Look at the show 48. The saying is that if a murder case is not solved in 48 hours then chances of being solved are halved. And these are the cops whos murder cases involve someone who walks down the street in broad daylight in the early morning and just guns down someone for their cellphone like its nothing then runs away. And the cops are scrambling to try and find out who did it.
So i think its silly to say that forensics has made serial killers switch tactics to school shootings. It's also a matter of taste, serial killers dont kill people just because they want people to die. They have tastes, they want to do certain things to the victim. Just gunning people down willy nilly doesnt fulfill those fantasies unless it is specifically the fantasy.
