The Romanian Army was, after the re-occupation of Bassarabia, tired and not really eager to join the great crusade against the commies. The occupation of Odessa and further on the fights on the Don up to Stalingrad were done by soldiers that believed in nothing but returning back to their loved ones. Plus, they were under equipped, and often they were used as cannon-fodder by the Germans, along with our Italian compatriots.
Skilled Romanian Officers were stripped of command of their whole units, while their soldiers were being sent to their certain death in order to simplify the German advance. Hell, our Cavalry was charging with horses against the Russian Tanks.
At Stalingrad, it was definitely the German Chain-of-command that went to shit. The front was spread way to thin, the Romanian forces were not equipped properly to defend against a combined infantry-tank assault, they had no way of communication in between the flanks.
They called for reinforcements while trying to keep the line intact, and they get slaughtered by the thousands for it. They kept the line up until their total decimation, and the Germans never sent help.
tl;dr : we got fucked up the ass, we lost more than 200.000 soldiers, more than 100.00 went missing in the gulags and the rest of them were forced to fight for the Soviets against their own allies, and later on, at the end of the war, they were lined up and shot in the head for treason, because they fought for their country.
