There's a theory that this teaching has become totally misinterpreted. Allegedly the Roman occupiers would slap people like that, not to injure but as a form of humiliation when they wanted to put them in their place. In that context, turning the other cheek *to the hated oppressor* is actually a ballsy act of resistance that makes him look like a dick and lets you retain your pride.
