how could there be communication and cooperation for anti-terror activities?

Europe needs for everyone to at least speak some English, down to all policemen and pubic officials.

I'm fine with English though, and I really wish more people in the world were taught English at an earlier stage. It's a shitty language in terms of logic, but it's easy to learn.

English is exceptional. As in every rule has tons of exceptions.

Still, the way it's been allowed to change and absorb words from other languages has only added to its usefulness.

Because the French actually really do not speak English. They just do not want to and so they block the language in their head. All their TV and internet is French. You rarely see French flags on here, while you see a ton of German and Northern European flags on here.

Spain has a poverty problem. Half the country is as poor as North Africa and the other half speaks some English, but often not enough to hold a conversation.

Stop it, Swede. I said people should be able to hold a conversation, at least the policemen and the public officials.

It is not some dark agenda that people in Europe can communicate about whether they just found a terrorist or illegal. What good does it do if a Spanish policemen finds a terrorist and sends a Spanish report to the Germans who cannot read it?

well, the fact is that some centuries ago only nobilty/rich people (and soldiers and traders obv) spent time in other countries meeting people that spoke other language, pleb in the XVIII centuries didn't need to communicate with people outside their country (or village, actually), so there was no need to learn a foreign language and the spread of the lingua franca of that moment was limited to upper class.

today knowing the current lingua franca is quite more important (and accessible) for every social class, so english spread in a much greater way

I'm actually extrovert and have no problems socializing, have friends all over europe so it's not me, didn't have that problem in hungary, you guys are pretty helpful to strangers neither in the czech republic or slovakia, neither in ex-yu countries (been to all of them, spoke english in croatia becuse I encountered a =U= tattoo and in slovenia for half the time when I couldn't understand shit), nor in greece even in bulgaria people speak good english compared to germany, the only german city where I could talk to people in english was surprisingly dresden, I might have just approached the wrong people but my travel experience says the most likely people to help you are teenagers and young adults preferably hipsters or other americanized style

teaching scholastic english. result:

>>>Student learn the junky english.

I was just in France last week, both Paris and the countryside, and I was surprised how many people spoke English, because I was told almost none did. I speak a fair amount of Deutsch though, so I was able to get by in the Alsace Lorraine region more than I thought.

No. There has never been a true French king of England. The King prior to William the Conqueror was Edgar, but he was kind of an unofficial king as he was uncrowned.
Harold Godwinson was the true, recognized king before William the Conqueror. Both Harold and Edgar were Anglo-Saxons, and even prior to these two there was the Cnut period, which had control of England, Norway and Denmark during his reign.

>French people are so friendly and speak other languages.
>>
>>69326404
Sounds about right. The scholastic English is what most people use most of the time. We can generally understand you, at the very least, but people who speak trashy broken English actually have trouble communicating their thoughts.

>>69325747
Take this guy for example. Obviously he is not trained in English and his grammar is fairly poor. He's got that typical "I learned English from watching TV" speech pattern you find in Arabs and Hispanics. He's still fully intelligible however, there are no problems whatsoever understanding.

You might not be able to achieve the same level of intelligibility though since without practice your vocabulary will be pretty small.
>>
>>69326589
I stayed in tourist areas mostly. Servers and owners of restaurants knew mostly English. Google translate's voice to text feature filled in the gaps.

I watched an angry Greek gyro man yell in English at a group of Indonesians for wearing the hijab in his restaurant. But he literally only spoke French and motioned to things when I tried to order from him.
>>
>>69326719
Gonna is not a word, you mean to say "going to." It can come out more like goin' to or goin' a but that's clearly not what they mean.

Just because people can understand doesn't mean you're doing it right. There's nothing outdated about it, you're just trashy.
>>
>>69326794

Restaurant owners, information folks. I was still surprised because I was told no one spoke English.

Not native speakers. They said they only knew a little bit.

I was also in the Pyrenees too, and I plenty of people knew English there too. French people are friendly. They get a bad rap.

Important to add that culturally Cnut forewent his Nordic roots and fully embraced the Anglo-Saxon culture to an extreme. Almost to a point where Cnut was more Anglo-Saxon than the Anglo-Saxons themselves.

The French culture definitely did have a big impact on the ruling class in England and is partly responsible for the difficulty of learning to write the language. The French speaking aristocracy sought to inhibit the development of a middle class by making the French language as complicated as possible.

Norman nobility were not French. Of course a lot of the regular stock were French, but the regular stock didn't settle in England. Culturally, they spoke French but they were definitely not French.
Williams lineage was Scandinavian. Hell, Rollo was his great-great grandfather.

>>69327269
I always felt that the big thing between the Anglo-Saxons and Nordic cultures was the weird Semi-Christian but sort of anti-Roman church religious identity of the Anglo-Saxons. Cnut getting his feet wet is starkly Anglo-Saxon. Can't imagine a Nordic King pulling that sort of thing. (Or any other King, for that matter)

UK should gtfo from the EU and we should make german and french as official within the EU, but of course would not be imposed onto other nations as a primary language
it would strengthen the independance we want to achieve from the anglos, so english should be thought as a third option for those who are able to hold a conversation in german or french

Question: Why does everyone say English is retarded mode easy to learn? I studied Spanish (Spain, not Mexico) and it truly is a simple, phonetic language. Compared to aspects of German, English, French or Dutch, Spanish is a walk in the fucking park. Is English really that easy?

Because of the exposition in popular media.
Music ,videogames ,movies etc.. You're constantly hearing and reading english ,especially since the internet so there is more exposition to it. We're speaking thousands of hours on several years.
It's the same as going to a country to learn its language : the sheer amount of exposition to the language will grow your skill

I'm not sure, but it could be because English lacks all genders and almost all declensions. Verb conjugation is ultra-simple for the most part and you just rely on word order. Perhaps that makes it easy to learn.
