As a structural engineer specializing in high-rise construction, I can't fucking believe people are still discussing this. The building was, like all modern high-rise buildings (and all super-tall's built built since the late 60's), a tube structure. In layman terms, this means you have an outer structural wall that is the primary lateral load-bearing structure, and an inner central core which is mainly a gravity load structure, held together via floor pans and trusses or straight beams on each floor. Different buildings use different methods for connecting that floor pan between the exterior lateral load bearing structure and the central gravity bearing internal core, but the WTC buildings used trusses.
This exterior structure is very strong and self-reinforcing, and even after massive damage, it will still remain highly effective, provided that connection to the internal core remains in place providing structural tension and cohesion. In the case of the 1 and 2 WTC, the huge uncontrolled fires and damaged fire insulation meant that the connecting trusses between the exterior structure and the floor pans that connected the exterior walls and the interior core were going to fail because trusses are prone to weakening under extreme temperatures due to their lightweight efficient design. The mode of failure is clearly visible IN THE FUCKING VIDEO as the trusses fail, you can see the exterior structure buckle outward; once the failure is in progress, the building is doomed. Seriously, it is that fucking simple.
Additionally, it wasn't the plane hitting the building or the relatively quick flash fire of the aviation kerosene that caused the failure, it was the enormous resulting fire fed by thousands of square feet filled with paper, office supplies, furniture and building materials (drywall). Had as big a fire been started by other means and never brought under control (even without fire insulation damage) the building would still have been in serious danger of collapse (this is what brought down 7 WTC) as the danger of collapse due to large/intense fires in tube-structure buildings that use truss / pan rather than straight beams for floor construction is a very real problem.
