If you see the range charts, do note the Taepodong-2 and KN-08 are currently in development. They may have at best single digits ready for use with extremely questionable reliability.
Even if they had a boosted fission nuclear device to put on them, there is no way a single digit amount of nukes without any kind of modern countermeasures or maneuverable re-entry vehicles gets through the missile defenses.
That said - politicos are worried because a conventional war in Korea would still be very expensive, especially the clean-up.

They only travel that fast during terminal descent. The US has two layers of midcourse based defense, the GMD system and the Navy's SM-3 missiles.
Midcourse is the suborbital 'cruising' phase where the missile doesn't turn at all and is going quite slow.
That being said - as to terminal defense THAAD and PAC-3 have done pretty well in the engagements that they have been doing.
