I remember thinking that the Game the Ellimist's species plays seemed like the coolest thing when I read it.
The biggest problem with Everworld was it's length.
It ends with Thor being awoken and the mighty Gods of Earth all being called together to unify and combat the Alien God threat, something that's been built up the whole series, and then it's just finished, with a cliffhanger so big it's a disappointing anticlimax.
Remnants was also good, more conclusive ending, but creative at least, for YA fiction. Some genuinely good sci-fi horror/uneasy sci-fi bits. Far better than the majority of YA shit in the last few years.

As far as Everworld, nothing they could've done would've lived up to what was being built up, though the massacre of Senna's merc army sort of fits the bill for a good 'final battle' even if it didn't conclude much. Everworld to me was always a great example of what so many media pieces do so badly: the idea of taking separate "cool" things and smashing them together and hoping the concept carries it to success.
Like, in the first part of Everworld we have Vikings attacking an Aztec city, and that could so easily have just come across as lame and tryhard, but it seemed to work there.
In a world of endless "pirates vs ninjas vs zombies" random humour, it stands out to me as a series.
