I say this as someone that's live on every coast, though I will say that while the midwest and south have a lot of really weird people, they are bar none some of the nicest people I have ever met. Even neighbors that don't like you in the south would look out for your house and property if you were gone, I have never experienced that kind of sense of community in LA or NYC.

I've spent a lot of time in the South. Between VA and Georgia there's decent people. They mind their own business. They are actually relaxed. They are funny. They talk slow. They dislike Yankees but dislike the West Coast even more, because they see right through West Coast bullshit (pretending to be "chill" - incapable of holding a conversation with sane Southern folk).
Texas to Lousiana and Flordia is full of weirdos. Some of the worst drivers on the planet. They are isolated and weak minded because of it. Things are easy and slow down there compared to the coasts. They share a lot with the South.

I live in Phoenix, and I love the south west. Its an amazing culture of vicious freedom loving conservatives, who arent really that backwards or christian. That triangle between Phoenix, LA and Las Vegas is perfect.
That said, New York is like the capital of the world and everything there is really cool. I may not appreciate the liberal culture, but I actually do appreciate the diversity and cosmopolitan nature of the city.

Quick tour of the country:
Florida: Very disconnected from the rest of the states, culturally. A fun little place but South Florida is notoriously unproductive.
Georgia: People here are typically very nice. Food is great. Not a lot of opportunities, though.
Tennessee: TOOT TOOT. Blue ridge mountains are darling.
Illinois: Chicago. It's a big city. Dirty, smelly, lots to do and a decent enough place to live. Suburbs and corn fields in northern Illinois are beautiful.
New York City: Welcome to CITY PLANET. With that many people in once place, it's bound to host the best and worst aspects of humanity.
Wisconsin: Slow place where nothing happens. People are darling but the winters are brutal.
Minnesota: Wisconsin's liberal cousin. A very functional place, government-wise.Twin cities are great places to live and raise a family, and it's likely to stay that way for years to come. My vote for best "family" state.
Colorado: Nice mix of western and southern lifestyles. A laid-back place where people leave each other alone and just enjoy the scenery.
California: It's so big and diverse that its hard to sum up in a small quip. Northern Cali is SILICON VALLEY, and the place really is as dorky and culturally remote as people say it is. It's like it's own little state. Los Angeles is basically it's own state as well, filled with all kinds of cash-strapped folks who are trying to "make-it". It's a city built on the belief that we're all going to be future millionaires. Many of them are. San Diego is a normal city filled with normal people and is unusually pleasant for a city its size.
Lifestyle: Americans in cities all have the same basic lifestyle. Coffee in the morning, go to work, hit bars in the afternoon, then go home. Much of the land outside of cities is farmland, and some Americans make a living growing food and managing livestock on family farms.

Mass isn't so expensive, unless you're in the city in which case you either need a damn good job, a family with a working wife, or a couple roommates. We have consistent work in all trades though so if you've got anything at all going for you, even if you can't afford the city, you can pick someplace along the commuter rail and be a comfortable 30 minute train ride away. And most of the eastern part of the state is that close to Boston.
