For example, 'they' means a group of people in english. If you have a group of ten girls and guys together, there is no superior pronoun sex taking over, it's neutral. In French, you have 'ils' which is a group of guys and 'elles' for a group of girls. However, if a single guy goes into that group of girls, the pronoun becomes ils instead of elles. Even if there's one guy and a hundred women, it still remains 'ils'. Therefore, the french language is literally patriarchy.

They're basically a male and a female they. A group of male people or object will use ils, a group of female people or objects will use elles. But any kind of mixed group, no matter what the proportions is, will use ils.
