I think the positives (sleep during your commute, no/low insurance, no cops pulling you over) out way the negatives (glitch crash, haxors, job loss). We can't avoid the robot revolution much longer
>>
>>69239166
I'm kinda for it now.
Last month I drove for 200km in the middle of the night while being sleepy as fuck and it was awful, never again.
>>
Both, there are a lot of fools driving out there who shouldn't be, but I don't think they should replace manual cars completely.
>>

Same but lucky me the road was mostly empty.
>>
>>69239166
Pro. Though it would destroy millions of jobs, automation is unavoidable better sooner than later.
>>
>>69239166
People will be able to liver in cheaper areas because they can commute longer to work(take a nap on the way to work).

Road trips will be awesome, you can pack and fuel up, start driving at night, go to sleep and only wake up when you need to refuel. Fuck flying, a ten-hour drive suddenly becomes doable instead of suffering.

Most importantly drivable cars will secure private transportation for the foreseeable future. There are some people that hope to push everyone towards public transportation.
>>

Who would've guessed? They're infamous for being the shittiest drivers in the area.
>>
>>69239166
Anti. It promotes laziness and will increase drug use. They are also worth shit unless every single car on the road is self driving, as they only work when everyone is driving correctly. Anyone that drives knows that barely anyone follows the laws to the letter.
>>
I'm for self driving cars. But only if manual driving is always an option.
>>
>>69241576
>they only work when everybody is driving correctly
Wrong
>>
>>69239166
German driving laws are strange. Blocking an intersection is legal (two cars), pulling into an intersection on the perpendicular, vacating a car in intersection, and it looks like there are traffic lights so maybe not a 4 way stop.

I get self driving cars are a popular idea to reduce accidents and such, but it wouldn't help congestion in many places. Not without decades of infrastructure reconstructions.I'm pro though just for the idea of an AI car with a Brooklyn accent.

They won't touch these until their automation systems are flawless.

If someone dies while being driven by one of these cars, the payout would be phenomenal.

Insurance companies won't want to insure the car companies, and the government won't want to foot the bill, either.

It will be a long time until we see these.
>>
>>69239166
There is nothing bad about self-driving cars if its owner can be sued for damages and charged with manslaughter in case of the accident. But problem would be that self-driving cars would be killing people and no one to would be responsible.

Also doesn't work in rain. Also doesn't work in the snow. Also works very poorly at night.

Good for people with long drives to work; make better use of the time.
Those who are afraid to drive in bad weather would benefit.
People who have had their licence suspended from drunk driving.

It will catch on slowly, but eventually it will reduce driving fatalities.
When about half the cars are self driving the government will mandate all cars be self driving.
Once again the government will glom onto a change and take credit for the change.

No credit will be given to the engineers who designed and made them work.
The companies which developed the technology won't be thanked, they'll be accused of greed any time the cars wreck.

Bootlickers will praise the government for saving lives.

I think that self driving cars will deal a serious blow to the economy.

>inb4 some sperg freaks out about adapting to change, I'm merely just stating what I think.

Self-driving cars will obviously lead to fleets of self-driving trucks. That's about 3.5 million truckers that will lose their jobs, Possibly more since truckers are expected to grow 21%. Not only that, but what about all the diners and motels and entire communities that rely on the money that truckers will spend.

It is the future and all, but there are going to be a lot of unintended consequences.
>>
>>69242875

"Never" I assume you mean in your life time.

I like the idea of self driving cars.

But is look forward to at first they are only on freeways, or perhaps only on freeways during high traffic.

After a While it would slowly transition to it being everywhere.
The thing is self driving cars makes EVERYTHING cheaper because the cost to trasport goods (truckers) would be cut down simply due to there being faster highways and less traffic.
>>
I'm a programmer self-driving cars are nothing but a nightmare from the software viewpoint

You'd have to make it flawless and practically bugfree and fuckups would result in loss of human life.

First off you'd need some sort of a nationwide switch to self driving cars which is never going to happen for obvious reasons. These out there with all the assholes on the roads is a recipe for disaster.

Naw, its not happening any time soon.

there was an interesting bit on NPR about this.

the bottom line is there is nothing you or anyone can do about it. self-driving trucks will be faster, safer, and cheaper. truckers will just have to go find new jobs.

I'm thinking a self-driving truck can do well on a freeway, but I can imagine it would be a nightmare from the software viewpoint when you start getting into city streets.

This is also for >>69243657
First, it takes a while to actually slow down a fully loaded truck. A self-driving truck would need to be constantly scanning ahead and watching future traffic lights, the amount of cars at a traffic light, take into account the speed limit and how much to apply the brakes the safely accelerate without impeding traffic. Say for example that two blocks away a light just turned yellow and there's five cars putting on their brake lights to stop for the impending red light change. A truck is going to have to take into account road conditions, distance to the eventual redlight, how many cars are stopped at the redlight, how much weight is in the truck, airbrake pressure all while avoiding potholes and taking into account bridge heights and other traffic hazards. Plus, when the truck itself gets to it's destination, how does it expect to put itself into the dock?

From what I heard self driving trucks will still have a trucker in the cab with the truck that will take over when the truck is off the freeway. It'll probably pay a lot less.

Assuming there's a robot revolution, how will this affect the jews in power?

>>
>>69239166
For!
My country is crowded with roads. It's just like a circuit. By building self driving cars, there would be less roads needed (less traffic jams) and there would be less traffic signs needed (cars could communicate with each other). There would be more space left for nature and towns. Moreover I think that the average human is too stupid to drive. More self driving cars would mean less deads.
Thirdly I think we have to give more space to pedestrians and less to cars. Our Europeans are not built to be filled with cars and highways Aka Coolsingel, Blaak, Unter dem Linden, Champs d'Élysées) Sitting in a car is not an easy way to talk with people on the streets. We have to realize that our cities have been taken away from us since industrial times. This is a way to take them back and let them shine again. Our continent have been filled with ugly roads and their signs. However, I think we have to let Europe and especially the big cities more look like the times when the cities and nature were a pleasure to look at. Cities like Brussels and Madrid are making their cities more walkable fortunately. When the cars are banned from the center, everyone would be able to walk in the middle of the street again. Just like the old times. It would be easy to park a car, because it could drive to the garage himself. To be honest, what's better than carefree driving to Paris while it's still night?
>>
logically i can think of no reason to oppose them except that it makes me feel like a cuck to be driven around by a robot
>>
I am pro-AI in general since AI will end up being racist as fuck.

>>69243399
>1 million miles
It drives at 30kmh, that's why it managed to avoid crashes, mostly because people would avoid the slow retarded I believe.

You don't know how that shit works.

I bought one of these new cars last year - surround view, night vision, motion detection, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot assist etc etc.

So here's how it works: during the rain the cameras and all the systems go crazy, because the car believes the reflection of light in the droplets are cars.
The front radar shuts down if it gets dirty or covered by snow.
The whole thing doesn't have a depth of vision, so it relies on the radar when estimating the speed and the radar only covers about 30 degrees at the front.
Naturally it doesn't have any understanding of materials or mass, so it mistakes a paper bag on the road for a obstacles and start braking.
The night vision doesn't see bumps and holes in the road, unless they have sharp edges. It's generally very bad with round shapes.

And that's the cutting edge of today's car industry. So unless you're ready to have a car with 20 cameras and 8 radars (all self-cleaning), infrared scanners etc, which will keep breaking and you will keep paying to get them fixed it will never work.
>>
>>69239166
I dont want the police to decided to pull my car over or want the corporations to disable my brakes because I said bad things about them over the internet
>>
>>69244379
Of course a computer can calculate things much better than a human, but how is a computer going to see what a traffic light is two blocks away. I'm more worried about its sensory input, not it's ability to make decisions on the data.

So no, a human driver would be much better than a computer trucker in city conditions.

It is not "legal", it is just more efficient to use the space, you are suppossed to clear the intersection as soon as possible, blocking it is what you do if you are retarded. Vacating a car on an intersection is anything but legal.
The guy who got rammed is just fucking stupid and should not have driven on the intersection in the first place, here you are expected to actually look ahead and not drop your foot on the gas when you see green.

This is what I mean.

I would love self driving but only if I know I can absolutely manually override. I would love to lets say read on the way to work.

However it seems like all these new products are doing the full retard the removing the manual methods. Like the thermostats that got a shitty update and just cut off the heat for a bunch of Canadians on a winter weekend. Or cars getting hacked and the driver can brake because jeep removed the old reliable vacuum pressure break shit that guaranteed the driver have a couple good breaks in the past.

Also I hate that one day I will be expected to have a work meeting on my way to work one day.

What happens when the AI on board the vehicle has to decide between your life or someone else? An AI good enough to drive your vehicle will have rules set in place regarding this.

Maybe an incident where your car loses control due to ice and there are 2 pedestrians on a side walk. You're heading towards them, but if your vehicle saves you, you'll kill them. If it saves them, it'll kill you by crashing into a car. What does it choose?

I don't see how self-driving cars could ever work.

What if there is trash in the road? A self-driving car won't know the difference between a stroller and an empty cardboard box. I imagine it won't be programmed to swerve around things in the road. It would probably stop and announce "Obstruction. Obstruction."

What about branches in the road? What about a busy parking lot with people walking around? Sometimes people stop and wave you on so that you're not waiting there all goddamn day.

Driving requires too much human intuition to ever be automatized.
>>
>>69241206

Most of all, this.

I don't trust anything that doesn't have a direct mechanical connection to a control element inside the car.

Electric steering? Fuck that.
Fuck electronic accelerators, too.
Let's not even talk about electronic brakes and automatic transmissions.

>drive
>car starts speeding up on its own
>leave accelerator
>nothing happens
>press brake
>nothing happens
>pull handbrake
>nothing happens because that's electric too

>Man killed in misterious accident, police are investigating the case. More at 19.
>>
>>69254096
My best guess is that it's gonna be incremental transition, where self driving cars would first be used on major highways, then on less and less used roads. Some standardization would need to happen, where the same kind of road surface and colors would be used everywhere

>>69254344
This will start to happen when cars get adopted, first they have to make sure everyone starts believing it's safe
>>
>>69254096
Could be argued the other way.

Humans tend to over react to obstructions on the road, that is why automated breaking systems are useful.
If the car spots the obstruction and doesn't over react and swerve way out of the way it would be safer.

Do you know what self driving cars cannot do? Make real time decisions. Sure, they can react to things, but a self driving car will see a bunch of shit in the road at night and stop. An actual driver will notice the nigger standing on the shoulder watching them approach and say "Nah fuck that" and keep going.

Self driving cars will get you killed because they're basically just delivery devices as far as criminals are concerned.
>>
>>69239166
Against. I would hate to be stuck in traffic behind some slow ass cars that brake for anything and everything.
>>
>>69239166
I don't know.
The biggest part of safe driving is that you are expected to predict behavior of other drivers.
With humans you have an array of communicating methods, including waving hands to let them through, blinking with lights and, you know, turn signals and at the very last, horn. Is the car able to observe them and react accordingly to the context?
Because to make them equal as road users, you have to give and require the same from both groups.
>>
>>69254096

Also, I thought of another thing. Sometimes the weather conditions make a person drive at a lower rate of speed than the speed limit.

I recall a couple months ago in my local city when the roads were all frozen over. Shit was slippery as fuck. I went about half the speed limit everywhere.

There is another instance where human intuition is required.
>>
>>69254976

>look at the incoming traffic, they're all speeding past the yellow light at a million miles an hour too

>leave brake
>car jerks left, I barely avoid the niggers but I'm now on a collision course with the guys coming the other way

Uh, I don't really think that it's normal to check for people going over double the speed limit before crossing the road. "Okay the road looks clear, let me just double check farther away for a car going way faster than the speed limit. Okay that is clear too."

I would say the near collision was your fault.

Personally, I'm very safe when crossing the road. I make sure that the vehicle is at a dead stop, or I'm positive that the driver has seen me, or the vehicle is going slow enough to allow me to cross the street in time should they refrain from braking.

I did have one instance though with a shitty driver like you. I was turning right onto a road after leaving a parking lot and the speed limit was 35 MPH. Some dumb fuckin' motorcyclist swerves around my car, gives me the finger, and takes off. Dude was going like 70 MPH. It's like Riiiiiiight, I cut you off. When I leave parking lots I should totally check for dumbass bikers two to three blocks away going double the speed limit before I turn out of a parking lot. Riiiiight, buddy." Hopefully he ended up getting in an accident later. Fuckin' shitty driver.

To be fair, the fog was fucked up that day. We were fucking around in the rural hills and we couldn't see shit. And these people were driving on the freeway, where the limit is 130 and the average driver is going at least 150 km/h. IIRC 70+ vehicles crashed and 5 people died in the pileup.

I'm for it, as long as I'm still allowed to drive my own.
>>
Yep. Misguided macho men with small dicks and smaller brains who feel the need to manually control the car shouldn't even get a say.

Most men aren't pigs but there's a minority of them who definitely are, and so many other things, who ruin the image of the rest.

I wouldn't pull the lever. Do you realize that you would get in serious legal trouble for doing that? You directly caused the death of a person.

The law doesn't punish a person for failure to act. You're not required to save anyone. I remember a court case awhile back where this chicken shit cop refused to help a man who was being attacked. The court decided that the cop wasn't required to help the man.

All my 80's and 90's sci fi movies make me think that, in theory, having an "autopilot" button on a car sounds nice, and very cool. And could prevent lots of accidents if a sleepy or drunk driver just sets the car to automatic instead of taking a gamble at staying awake.

But in practice we all know it would become a MANDATORY safety feature, and everyone would just use it all the time for convenience, lessening driver skill and eventually, driving itself will become a lost art as Liberal rulemakers push harder and harder for a driverless future.

We've already seen how having internet on youre phone looks.

Everyone is glued to their screens 24/7 instead of just using their phone now and then to look something up. it would be the same. Humans are drawn to convenience like moths to a flame, tradition and culture be damned.

Car culture? pffft, fuck that, I need to feel safer in my big bubble car. if I dont have to drive it, I can take timmy to soccer practice safely and comfortably while reading my romance novel and browsing facebook!

Kek, that car just reminded me of a scene I saw a few days ago which was fucking hilarious

>driving down a boulevard at 80
>again limit is 50 but nobody gives a shit
>traffic police ahead is doing 80 like everyone else
>me, police and other people align left to turn
>there is a separate light for turning left, which becomes green on both sides only after the light for going straight turns red
>light for straight turns green
>the guy in front of the police starts up at a million miles an hour with a massive wheelspin, burns the red light, and cuts in front of the people who are just setting off from the other side
>stops at a bar just on the other side of the intersection
>police do nothing
>becomes green
>we all go
>doing 80 again
>after a minute or so I see the same guy coming in hot from behind
>slaloming his way around the traffic
>overtakes me from the left
>cuts all three lanes and overtakes police from the right, before swerving back to the center lane to avoid a truck parked illegally
>police do nothing
>everyone says "well fuck it then" and starts doing 100

>torino.avi

He had a 1996 Fiat Punto with just that color.
