http://nypost.com/2016/03/28/california-reaches-deal-to-be-first-state-with-15-minimum-wage
>The proposal, which still must win approval from moderate lawmakers, would make California the first to raise the statewide minimum wage to $15 an hour – the highest in the nation – while giving the governor the right to opt out if the economy falters.

I can see this going well.
>inb4 the government opts out, but it's too late as job cuts and replacing people with machines has already happened
>>
This is a good thing. Automation will only make our lives easier and the sooner we get started on it the better.

California leading the future in technological development as always.
>>
>>69229381
at first the lost jobs will cause riots andeveryone will hate AI and robots but then transhumanism will occur where no currency exits and capitalism dies.
>>
>>69229381
It's going to suck for anyone that does not have a skill that is worth paying money for (versus buying a machine to do the job or foregoing it), which is going to be an increasing amount of the population with minimum wage hikes and advancement in automation.
>>
>>69229381
There was an interesting article a few years ago on NHK. Basically it talked about how the Japanese were solving their aging population with automation and robots.
>>
>>69229519
The same thing happened with the advent of the assembly line. Our culture and economy will adjust. Sure it will be rough at first for some but the ends certainly justify the means.
>>
i'm curious about what this will do for companies like mcdonald's and others who hire mostly part-time laborers

will they decrease those and look to hire more full-time workers or what

it seems like any fast food joint has a majority staff of part-timers and maybe like 2 full-timers (management)
>>
>>69229602
From an industrialization stand point that is the actual solution for low birthrates. The west is committing suicide by importing sand niggers instead of focusing on automation to solve the low birthrate problems.
>>
>>69229208
>inb4 the government opts out, but it's too late as job cuts and replacing people with machines has already happened

>implying
The economy will begin a slow and painful doward spiral. Large corps are going to start automating and increase their productivity in the long term by a massive factor. This will spur the GDP of California to most likely soar through the roof all the while causing massive income inequality. Liberals will point to the "success" of the minimum wage and claim that it boosted the economy all the while claiming that the corporate fat cats are draining the "middle class" of its wealth. So they'll implement massive social safety nets taxing the corporations, except of course, those with influence enough to write in enough loop holes to negate the tax increase a.k.a all of them, kill off the little guy, cause even more middle and lower class angst, and massive budget short falls, and then start yelling around how taxes need to go even HIGHER and even more benefits spending to be made.
>>
>>69229602
And the EU is importing people by the thousands because of a dwindling population of unskilled workers.

Golly gee that certainly won't blow up in their face in 20 years where most jobs have been replaced by machines.
>>
I feel bad for the skilled labor that was making $15 a hour already.

There is no way they will get a raise to put them back above minimum wage.
>>
>>69229381
It's funny because it's already too hard to get a job in California I moved last week because of this
Reading this news just makes me feel even more glad I left
Even more illegals will be taking jobs now

>>

Assembly line displaced jobs but new industries making machines and goods were enabled. Now a large number of low skilled jobs are threatened and for every couple of guys who fix or build the robots, there will be hundreds displaced.

>$15 an hour
>13,4 €

You need to be a specialist to be able to pull that kind of salary here.

What does this mean burgers. Less jerbs for commies?
>>
Yeah but this also gives people the opportunity to get jobs related to programming and it to maintain these things. Right?
>>
>>69230054
I have a friend who owns a small local pizza joint in SD. Some of the best pizza I've ever had. He told me he's going to have to let go half his staff and do mornings by himself if he has to pay his employees 15 an hour. Feel sorry for the dude but if he decides to move his business I'd imagine he'd make a killing wherever he went. The pizza is just that good.
>>
I'm not too well versed in the inner politics of all this, but let me say that the REASON for these kinds of arguments for higher min wage happening are good. It is unfeasible to have a low end job like that and live, and as much as you might be inclined to say well get a better job, they wont. And for all intents and purposes, they don't have to.

I'm curious how higher paying jobs will scale up. from every corner we have tensions rising due to a need for reform, now even the attempts at positive changes for wages will start to bring conflict over earnings. Don't disregard me as disillusioned, the entire world is rife with chaos. Has that always been the case though? Well, maybe, but not to this degree.
>>
>>69229208

there's some jobs that just can't support paying employees $15 an hour
>>
>>69229208
yaaay more homeless people
>>
A £10 an hour minimum?! Damn California must have some high taxes
>>
>>69230549
I work at a mom and pop pizza place and surely my store will close down. All the mom and pop stores will. The only places that will survive are the ones who can afford to only have like 1 employee running the store or the ones that can afford to jump straight to total automation.

Our food market is going to be dominated by restaurants that don't actually make food but instead just reheat frozen or partially baked stuff that will only require a few chefs to mass produce every other morning then have one chef essentially reheat the food as it's ordered instead of having a team of chefs every night.

Waitstaff will go completely automated. There's a Chili's down the street from me that has a little tablet on every table that has the entire menu on it. All it did when I was there last was calculate the bill but it wouldn't take much effort at all to put the menu on it and negate the need for a waiter at all, instead it would just be food runners who drop the food off at each table which would only require a handful of people for a big restaurant.
>>
>>69229208
And thus, the beginning of the robot era began.
>>
>>69230552
For now yes. But those are difficult jobs the average person cannot do. Even those jobs will soon become automated as teachnology advances forward exponentially to the AI era.

This is supposed to be mankind's striving goal. No one has to work, hunger is no longer an issue as cloning and genetically grown foods rule. Automation takes over and manages itself. No reason to work because resources are hardly an issue in this AI world. But to get there, a few generations must suffer as the shit s implemented. We happen to be that first generation so buckle up.

Only jobs safe in the next 50 years are.

Real estate
Programing
Medicine
Engineering
Child/senoir care
Drug dealing

That's basically it. Everything else will be slowly weeded out.
>>
by 2022*

OP forgot to mention that.

it's not a bad thing. if a business can't cope they need a new business model. simple as that.
>>
>>69231087
I've seen those little tablets at applebees you can pay to play games on them instead of socialize with your family and friends when you're out

fuck why did i have to be born right in time to witness the civil war of all humanity.

this is a good point about local stores too, surely there must be some kind of loophole...i mean, couldn't you guys raise the price of a pizza to compensate for people making more in the average worker class :^)
and then the cycle continues
Except an AI would automatically adhere to the tenets of capitalism (hyper capitalism, not what we have today which isn't hasn't been capitalism for decades), since it's the most efficient way of handling an economy with limited resources.

Anarchism isn't a lasting state, and communism will never work (nor would an AI actually even attempt it, as it's horrifically inefficient in every single aspect).

Wow you're stupid! it's too bad there's no bold option because I need to emphasize again that you are incredibly stupid.

this is about more tha the wage increase, looking at this issue alone you see automation, replacement, and of course the money issues

but moving outside of it you have all the impacts of liberal media which im sure youre aware of in all countries, the falseness and sheer uselessness of politics here and abroad, several collapsing countries with immigration and economic problems, a new internet trend regarding disagreement over established history

women everywhere being cunts as usual but not regulated, youve got cuckold tendencies in life and media, you've got a lack of critical thinking perpetuated by the media and also people's self regulating habits of consuming things that do not require them to think, you've got a kind of orwellian style of thought monitering going on in european countries, youve got....

do i need to go on? big picture you fuckhead, this is just another straw on the camel's back

IF you are going to have tariff-free trade, then either all countries involved need to agree on a set minimum wage (as well as set ecological laws), or you have to get rid of all of those things. Otherwise China can drop labor below the minimum wage and trash its ecosystem in order to gain a monopoly for a few decades, at which point, everyone who knew how to make this shit is retired or dead, and China can hike up its prices to whatever they want.

Personally, I would rather just have a tariff, and let each country operate as it pleases.

Capitalism will die when the last of our species does. Technology's only enemy is communism. Communism kills innovation, but innovation chips away at the scarcity problem, without which Communism has no reason to exist.

Increase minimum wage
>people laid off
>small businesses close
>costs rise
>middle class narrows

Look at San fransisco, yes people get paid more but they pay 5,000 a month for an apartment or they have to buy a wooden 8 X 3 box and liveninbit for $500 a month

You can't just magically raise a wage.. All it does is ruin the middle class.

>NPR faggots say that a higher minimum wage will help workers who are making over $15 already as well as they will presumably get a raise
What's the point? If everyone's wage goes up won't the price of bread and milk go up too? Isn't that simple supply and demand?

Here's the kicker: unemployment benefits will probably stay the same (and thus be worth less to all the ppl who will be layed off)

>>
Understand that a minimum wage does not guarantee jobs. It guarantees only that those who get jobs will be paid at least that minimum.

And that leads to two bad outcomes: unemployment and higher prices.

You best explain this by asking a simple question: What is a wage? A wage is the price of labor. Now, what happens if the price of labor rises, not because workers have become more productive, not because a business must pay higher wages to hold on to valuable employees, but only because the government requires it?

When the minimum wage rises, employers will adjust. They will use less labor.
They'll fire current employees or cut back on their hours.
They will also raise prices for their goods or services. These are undesirable consequences. But let's also consider another bad effect Businesses will hire fewer workers, especially those with little or no job experience.

Raising the minimum wage makes it harder for young and inexperienced workers to get jobs, to get on that crucial first rung of the employment ladder. And many of those who do benefit from a wage increase will likely find those benefits undone. They will work fewer hours, will work harder per hour, and will get less training

These are not terribly difficult tasks. Taking orders can be given to offshore labor overseas (or largely pushed to internet/mobile app). Managing the business is going to be one job, and then one full time employee to make sure the machines keep running.

>what's the point
It's an illusion that people will actually take home more money. The truth is that 15/hr puts anyone working more than 23hrs into the min tax bracket, which I expect is even higher% in California. People will really take home about $7-8 an hour depending on how they file. Cal state gov needs gib me dats too.

Sectarian violence continues in Europe, as another string of bombings and migrant riots hits Germany over the weekend. It's true, you shit. A medium cheese pizza went up 10% to $17 when we changed minimum from $9 to $10, if we had to do the same to get to $15 that's $25 for a fucking cheese pizza and well over $30 for 2+ toppings.

I'm a manager so I get to see things like how much we pay in labor, on slow days it's 30-32% of our total net sales, and on Friday (busiest day) it drops down to about 22-25%. And that's being somewhat critically staffed too. Having less employees just means everyone has to be there longer to do closing duties, having too many there is never a problem because we can just send people home.

Every year the owner of my store tosses around the idea of not renewing the lease and having to increase the cost of labor by 50% will probably be the last straw to break the camel's back. It will be unsustainable for a lot of mom and pop places, they'll have to force that 50% onto the customers which will simply put them out of business.
