Kickboxing is great if you have flat/steady ground (you won't) and your opponent has a very good sense of fair play (he doesn't).
Boxers will beat kickboxers most times because they're better trained in speed and agility. Their guards are tight, their dodges are trained, and their punches are efficient. Kickboxers will go down if they lose footing or their opponent starts anticipating kicks.

If you want a real and practical self-defense I'd suggest taking two things, boxing and judo. Boxing will teach how to throw, dodge and take a punch, and judo teaches body throws - how to give and take - and joint locks. That's it. With those two you can do a lot of damage. All the white tiger, drunk monkey, pissed flamingo, shitting dragon crap is just that.
