In modern times though, Russia's eastern frontier is horrendously underpopulated but full of valuable minerals and resources. Russia can't afford to extract these and doesn't have the manpower.
China wants that shit and is already taking it. The Russians let themselves get cucked by allowing Chinese companies in to work Russian land, then export the product back to China. We are seeing the end of Russia, but that won't help China stay above water.

China is pragmatic and will eventually work its way into the Western machine, though probably while also netting itself a fair share of influence in whatever follows.
Russia will fade once Putin is gone. He ensured that he had all the power and has therefore sentenced Russia to suffer weak, feckless leaders once the strongman is finally gone.
China will carve up the eastern portions of Russia and what remains of the once-great Russia will either melt into the European sphere or become one of those countries that talks a big game but forgot to clean the shitstain off its pants.
