From what I understand, the German U-boats took it as standard practice to rescue survivors from the ships they sank, and deliver then safely to the shore, or to Red Cross ships.
But after the British ship Laconia was sunk, the U-boat that sunk it rescued the survivors and radioed that they were going to peacefully deliver the survivors to the Allies. A USAF bomber then was ordered to attack the U-boat, and it had to dive to escape, which killed many of the Laconia survivors which were on the deck of the U-boat. The German Navy then stopped rescuing survivors after this, because they could not afford to risk losing any U-boats.
I wonder how many crewmen of torpedoed ships died in the years after because of this greedy attempt to ambush a sub trying to act honorably. Really unfortunate.
