Like it or not, the american justice system is sketchy as fuck at times, it gets it right most of the time, but certainly not at a high enough rate to risk killing innocent men.
Which is kind of why I wish there was a reasonable doubt test above the norm for capital punishment. You should have to catch them literally holding the bloody knife, with multiple eye witnesses saying they saw him stabbing to condemn a man to die.
Some of the convictions that were overturned were on the flakiest fucking evidence in the world. Some known liar saying they saw shit, no body found, no physical evidence, still get railroaded.

The way I understand it, it's a way for those doing the executing to maintain their humanity as they are also taking part in a killing. Like how in a state sanctioned firing squad, they used to use blanks, so no man would know which one of them had fired the fatal shot.
