Why? the Iraq war was a horrible mistake, so was Syria and Libya. Also America has a history of over-throwing leaders like the democratically elected Shah in Iran in the 70s for oil and money (I'm excusing propping up dictators like Pinochet to combat communism). I got politically concerned pretty young. By time I ended up in high school I was some kind of communist or fascist. I didnt really think of myself like that, but I think thats just the truth. I thought the government should be forceful and imperialistic. I thought the government had something grand to accomplish and it shouldnt be ashamed about that. By time I got to college I had swung into the other direction. I began to doubt any authority could be well exercised. I thought government, and even society, was necessarily abusive to individuals. I very much appreciated the unabombers manifesto.
I thought I was doomed during college. That it was only a matter of time that I would commit some act of violence, or maybe suicide. It wasnt that I wanted to, it just seemed that participating in society was inevitably morally reprehensible. I gained some valuable social and business experience during college. As a radical, I had assumed that people were necessarily innocent, and were wronged by society and government. The more I encountered people the more I realized that they werent that 'innocent'. Even if normal people are good natured, they are confused and incapable of managing the world around them. Good people cause social harm constantly, not because they are evil but just because they dont know any better. Its not their fault. People have to be cared for. At that point I got really interested in law and studied it thoroughly. I finished college and got my BS in economics.
Now I think I am vaguely conservative and libertarian. I dont really know. I think freedom is more important than happiness, and rights are more important that policy. I dont think the 'will of the people' is admirable, and I think its a crucial function of government to resist the mob like sentiment of the general public. I believe the basic purpose of government is to establish social stability, and to actively manufacture freedom, which we dont possess naturally.

I didn't really get into politics until college, and I just kind of went along with my conservative republican upbringing de facto.
Then once I started looking into different political view and comparing them to what I actually believed, I agreed most with the Libertarian view (Socially liberal, fiscally conservative). I dabbled in Anarchocapitalism for a while but quickly realized it would be a huge failure.
Now I just call myself independent because while I still mostly agree with Libertarian principles, I don't think Democratic socialism would be that bad if implemented correctly.
