if you look at a lot of the Renaissance European scientists, they usually received their knowledge from the Muslims in Spain. The Muslims not only transmitted the ancient wisdom of the Greeks and Romans, they built on it with mathematic, optics, alchemy, etc. They also served as a conduit for Chinese and other Asian inventions. For instance, many Chinese or Mongol armies would have Muslim engineers working for them.
What killed Islam was the legalism of the religion. At some point in early Middle Ages, the religious authorities started to place restrictions on the acceptable fields o inquiry. Also, the invasion of the Mongols absolutely destroyed most of their empire and resources.
