I've got to agree with South Parks conclusion that he loved shoving religion down peoples throats. I was an internet athiest at one point, just a confession, and argued about religion in troll threads. He seems to encourage people to fight meaningless symbolic causes like christian displays in government buildings.
He had good timing. He was in bush era america where the president claimed to have consulted god before deciding to invade iraq. He became big after the 9/11 attacks, after the catholic church scandals, with the rising awareness of scientology and their tax exempt status, and athiests were still largely "closeted" and avoided questions about their religious affiliation. He stood in opposition to a lot of differant groups a lot of people didn't like.
I think to some extent in the last decades athiests have gotten less stigmatized though so he just doesn't have the same allure. Obongo has referenced atheists multiple times, people are more open about being athiests, and running for office as an atheist is more politically viable so I think the movement lost steam.

Batista was rounding up every rural Cuban and herding them into cities so they wouldn't join into an army. There were tons of student led urban attacks with much loss of life in the cities. Look up the DRE. They were anti-communists that led a failed raid which turned most Cubans against or at least unsupportive of Batista
Castro and Che sat in the mountains safe while launching small raid attacks to stay relevant. Their prior "invasion" of the island on the Granma resulted in like 80% casualties for the commies. They needed time to regroup.
After enough time passed, regular Cubans began to detest Batista even more because he ramped up the oppression to stop the rebels. This led to his people abandoning him, his good soldiers deserting, bad/untrained/conscripted soldiers being sent to attack then now marching rebels, and eventually his generals deciding not to fight once Castro approached Havana.
Castro and Che rode a wave of discontent into power and rewrote history to make themselves look essential. Batista was going down regardless.

You have to understand that no candidate has a homogeneous glob of supporters with hivemind beliefs. You cannot categorize all Trump supporters as being exactly the same and you cannot categorize Sanders supporters in the same way either.
Yes, there are racist Sanders supporters undoubtedly. There are racist supporters of every candidate running for office though. There's definitely going to be some percentage of Sanders supporters who are butthurt enough that he is not getting the black vote to get pretty nasty.
