In 1970, there was a split in Sinn Féin over whether to continue abstentionism. The party had decided to end its abstention of the Irish and Northern Irish parliaments and a whole bunch of party members walked out.
Those that stayed were the Marxists and became known as Official Sinn Féin. They later changed their name to Sinn Féin, The Workers' Party and then just the Workers' Party. It's basically non-existent today.
Those that split from the party in 1970 are the Sinn Féin of today. They're left wing populists, but nowhere near far-left. They're the third biggest party in Ireland and second biggest in Northern Ireland.

Personally, I believe that Scotland will lose either way. We can not tell the future and there is no point lingering on past decisions.
Scotland in the UK will be ignored in Westminster as usual and a contemporary Conservative government will most work against it's interests. Leaving the UK could leave Scotland isolated with England as a neighbour that would not enjoy it's company. It could also become another part of the EU's states and lose itself due to being so small compared to other EU states. Also the EU could lead to uncertainty which I believe swayed some voters in the referendum (ironic that this is being lose in the EU referendum as a tactic which makes the EU referendum a Scottish referendum 2.0 in a way).

I'm from Northern Ireland but the United Kingdom is becoming more like the Divided Kingdom at the moment.
England is part that has the most focus with Scotland and England disagreeing politically and socially and are starting to drift apart. Wales is like a little England and is almost forgotten to be honest. Northern Ireland as usual is being violent and is the black sheep of the family that everyone knows is there and wants to forget about.
I don't think England and Wales would benefit from Scotland leaving as they're on the island of Britain and are a close partner but seeing views in England online and in opinion polls; English people are getting fed up with Scotland and Northern Ireland.
