Geographically speaking, there's two big islands in this archipelago. One is called Great Britain, one is called Ireland. There's nothing "British" geographically speaking about Ireland, nor is there anything "Irish" geographically speaking about Great Britain. It makes no geographical sense to call the two islands the "British Isles" or the "Irish Isles" - no more than it would make sense to call Corsica and Sardinia the "Corsican Isles", or Java and Sumatra the "Javan Isles".
Politically speaking, on these islands there are two states: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Ireland. Given that five-sixths of Ireland is not "British" politically speaking and the whole of Ireland is not "British" geographically speaking, it doesn't make a lick of sense to call the whole archipelago the "British Isles".
The term is politically motivated and always has been. I don't see why there needs to be a name at all, "(Great) Britain and Ireland" or "the UK and Ireland" seems as perfectly adequate to me as "France and Germany" does.

In 1970, there was a split in Sinn Féin over whether to continue abstentionism. The party had decided to end its abstention of the Irish and Northern Irish parliaments and a whole bunch of party members walked out.
Those that stayed were the Marxists and became known as Official Sinn Féin. They later changed their name to Sinn Féin, The Workers' Party and then just the Workers' Party. It's basically non-existent today.
Those that split from the party in 1970 are the Sinn Féin of today. They're left wing populists, but nowhere near far-left. They're the third biggest party in Ireland and second biggest in Northern Ireland.
Pretty much the same thing happened with the Official IRA versus the Provisional IRA, except a year earlier in 1969.
