Back-up sights: don't cheap out on 'em. Just bite teller bullet and get some Magpul backups. Could be relatively cheap if you already have the fixed front post sights on your rifle.
You can get a nice set of steel plates (armour) on eBay for around $130 (front, back, sides) you could go with the Ar500 armour plates but lead times are up to 12 weeks
