3 things:
1) He doesn't need to come off as a good guy, he just needs to hammer home how corrupt and incompetent and unfit for the job Hillary is, something most people already know deep down.
2) He needs to make a play for Bernie voters -- union workers and other disenfranchised working class people who already dislike Hillary. They exist in abundance, and while they don't like Trump, they also don't like Hillary. Either demoralize them into staying home or pull them in by adopting part of Bernie's populist message once he's gone.
3) It doesn't so much matter what the media says as what they do. Trump understands this. He figured it out a long time ago and he uses it to his advantage. They cover him because he is ratings gold. They talk about all of his crazy antics and his life and his background and everyone else, including Hillary, gets drowned out. Over a long campaign this is effective because it reduces the opposition to a caricature that looks hopelessly unable to compete with Trump's savvy. This is what happened to Bush, Rubio, Cruz, and everyone else who went up against Trump. It largely doesn't matter if people hate Trump, what they end up seeing over the long-term are a bunch of effete wimps who can't outsmart the guy.
Hillary is going to walk right into the same trap Jeb and the rest did. Jeb was once a frontrunner. Trump was once written off as a joke by his opposition. We'll just go through the whole cycle again.
