The charge might be a formality. There was another recent case where a homeowner defended himself from a violent home invasion by an armed meth addict by stabbing him with a kitchen knife. The attacker fled and his accomplice dumped him in a gutter to die. Home owner was charged with murder and then cleared. No trial.

Police care more about the encounters that homeowners have with criminals simply because it can lead to the criminal getting killed in circumstances that might not meet the strict definition of self-defense in the criminal code, and they have to charge you if it's not perfectly, "he came at me with a knife and I blasted 'em".
