It really helps to have a job while looking for a job. The worse/harder the work is, the better it is on your resume. Helps even more in the job interview. Prospective employer doesn't even have to ask a question to know you are not scared of hard work if you are currently. Plus everyone understands the motivation of finding something better. Going into an interview unemployed, the first thing you are going to be questioned about is why you are currently unemployed. What happened at your last job, how long ago was that, and so on.
If i was you, i would start volunteering somewhere (any Thrift store or soup kitchen will take you) for 4 hours a day 5 days a week while spending 4 hours a day 5 days a week looking for places to give your resume too. If you work hard this will also provide you with a very valuable reference. Shoot as high as you can and then take the best option you find.

Go the extra mile and set yourself apart. It's tough to get a gig, but, you have to be willing to put yourself out there. On my journey of becoming a senior fisheries biologist, I've traveled over 15,000 miles with my wife working from the deck of commercial boats all the way to the boardroom providing technical and policy consultation/analysis for fisheries quota negotiations.
I had to be willing to hit the road and take the shit jobs that build the core rep of what is it to be different and attractive and a lot of that was doing the shitty grunt jobs. Any kid can go to school and get 30 degrees, but, hardly a one marine biology/fisheries grads knows how to run boats, pump hydraulics, work with power generation, or do things like run tractors to launch boats on a beach in Alaska.
It was a combination of luck and ambition for me.
I refused to lose, I refused to not be the best, as corny as that sounds.
Sometimes it's all luck, sometimes it's all skill, and sometimes it's some weird juxtaposition thereof. That being said, I think many people miss out on their dreams and aspirations simply because they are lazy and are too comfy staying in or near their home towns.
If you're not willing to hit the road and take that 10 dollar an hour job shoveling shit thousands of miles from home in order to build your rep grinding it out, don't expect the stars.

I'm a hiring manager and I currently employ a staff of 12 people that are a combination of permanent and temporary technicians and sub-level permanent biologists.
Ambition is my number one hiring quality. This is what I almost exclusively look for in hiring staff. I will take a kid that wants the job and wants to learn any fuckin day over some Master's grad that thinks he/she is some hotshot badass that is entitled to something.

I think a lot of it is knowing your interviewers. Out of all the job interviews that I've had in my lifetime I was able to find out something about the people interviewing me. My first interview was right out of high school for a labor position at a shipyard. I remember noticing someone's Mopar jacket hanging in the office that my interview was in. I ultimately brought it up and shifted the whole interview into just bullshitting about cars.
I eventually got hired internally in the same company for an apprenticeship. When I left the company I had 6 years of construction experience and was a Journeyman of my trade with numerous qualifications/certificates.
