It is a very good school. Lots of high-ranking programs there, plus the athletics are good (not recently, but still). Athletics are a big deal in American colleges. It's got quite the legacy behind it.
I've never liked Ann Arbor, but I did apply and was accepted to U of M. I wound up at MSU because their nuclear physics program is better (top in the country, no less), but that's before I changed gears completely and set my sights on medical school.
