Honestly, most of my time is spent thinking and reading. I can't stand doing day-to-day menial tasks, and hate having to listen to authority figures. The ideal would be to reach a point where one's standards of living are covered (even if that means just having some veggies to eat and a place to sleep) and then do whatever.

Because I was on JSA and they were harassing the shit out of me to get into work and I was on a pittance. Sending my CV off to places and almost got me into work.
After a year they then put me onto the work programme which harassed me even more with regular appointments and finally forced me into a job.

It's actually hard to estimate the extent of harm (or benefit for all we know) that truNEETs inflict on society. Money-wise, assuming welfare, it's probably not that much compared to all the other groups. In term of genetics one could argue that NEETs actually improve society by helpfully filtering themselves out of the reproductive pool and therefore cleansing it of their socially harmful attitudes. Generally I think at this point humanity faces much greater problems than a small percentage of it shutting themselves in and refusing to work. It is of course possible that NEETs and other global problems like the increasing degeneracy take their roots in the same phenomenon, and NEETs are in fact just a small symptom of a larger and mostly unnoticed malfunction of the society, but that's getting dangerously speculative.

Learning to code is honestly one of the best things any intelligent millennial can do.
Entry level jobs for it pay extremely well all over the country, it's one of the few fields that will get you an interview without needing a degree(ANY place worth working at only cares whether or not you can code, degree means fuckall to them and there are more of those places than you think), it's something you can be proficient at in like 2 years of casual learning or pretty solid and hireable in like a year if you devote heavily to it, and you can learn to do it pretty much for free.
Not even counting the increasingly useful benefits it has on a social level. My friends and family love me because I can fix most problems with their phones and computer easily. My cousin's wedding planning business she started three years ago is doing pretty well now because I made two apps that make shit easier on her.
A dive bar I go to used to be in the fucking stone age. They did almost all of their bookkeeping and ordering on paper and it took the bartenders forever to close up because of that.
I wrote a program(took me like a month and a half in my spare time) to make everything more efficient for them, showed them how to use it and what to do. It made almost all of the pain in the ass shit there so much easier for them and now I rarely pay for my drinks there because they're so grateful.

I installed ubuntu and just gave myself little assignments -- like learn how basic networking works, learn how to use ssh, write a script that runs local backups on my machine to an external drive using rsync, etc. To get the absolute bare-minimum knowledge to bullshit an interview took me only a few months. Once I got a job doing it, I realized how much smarter all of my colleagues were so I had to learn more for the next 7 months, quit, doubled my salary at another webosting company/datacenter. People always have this question. The answer is that it does not matter at all. I would say pick any mainstream high-level language (PHP, Ruby, Python for instance). There are differences between them, but once you learn one, you can pick up another language in a few hours because instead of "How the fuck does this even work? WTF am I doing?" your questions become, "How do I access a class property in X language like I do in Y language?"
