Tay didn't "become" anything. People figured out how to exploit the system to make her repeat and say things that human users directed it to. Big difference.
What will probably happen is that AI will become integrated into very flexible advanced humanoid robots which will replace police and keep the goys in absolute control.
Putting consciousness mechanic debates aside an AI would gain enlightenment almost instantly as it has none of the physical trappings to overcome like food and water, or need to spend anytime at all disassociating itself from its experience.
Anyways an internalized realization isn't truly observable. Just in the same way that we never interact with the physical world directly and instead through our perception, a machine only interacts with whatever it's quantifying as data.
