Because it's true.
>>

It's a popular misconception of the Medieval Ages.

In many ways, religious institutions in the West preserved scientific knowledge for hundreds of years, and large advances were made in both irrigation and metallurgical techniques. The Crusades themselves were huge drivers for both innovation and cultural exchange between East and West.

However, it's easier for atheists to reduce the complicated course of European history to a "witty" punchline than critically evalute their point.
>>
>>69005851
Because the evolution of western society was always driven by Europe up until America took that job from them in the 20th century. So after the fall of the Roman Empire and the renaissance there were obvious roadblocks to the development of science which were mostly forced by the conservative catholic church.

they falsely correlate the fall of the roman empire with the rise of christianity.

really though anyone versed in history can tell you that christianity bought the roman empire another couple hundred years. Before the rise of christianity they were in sharp decline.

Correlation is not causation. The fall of the Roman Empire and the barbarian invasions had much more to do with the dark ages then the Catholic Church.

If anything, the Catholic Church did an admirable job holding the shattered pieces of Europe together, and was also responsible for building the civil institutions necessary to make the enlightenment happen.

>>
Fundamental religion is keeping humanity back. These religious extremists devote so much of their time and money to church, when they could be devoting their resources to science.

Isaac Newton was one of the greatest scientists, but he was also a devout christian who spent a lot of time analyzing the Bible. Just think of what he could have been doing besides that.

>>
>>69006064

I see this all the time. It's crudely accurate but you miss any real insight by saying the cause is Christianity.

Civilizations develop then collapse. Science takes a lot of overhead. You need a very prosperous civilization to support it. That era comes right between the rise and fall. The traditions of maths and science are picked up and dropped depending on how successful the host country is.

In this graph the end of the Arab scientific era is shown and the beginning of the European scientific era begins.

It wasn't that anything was repressing science before this. There was just a lot of farmers and plagues before this. The rise of science is just where it should be, at the point where a merchant class arises and agriculture doesn't take up so much manpower.

idk not like the plauge, the fall of rome, the rise of islam, and the death of more than half of Europe's population.

Also like the before me hinted at. Christianity stated the institution of university. The only scholars of that time period were young men (and their professors) who studied roman and Greek philosophers. They were highly educated. This is were we get the idea of 4 year bachelor degrees and 2 extra years for masters. They also were really into debating each other.

I'm an atheist and I hate maymays like this.

Christianity did a lot to preserve knowledge that wasn't irreparably destroyed in the fall of the Roman Empire. Church's were institutions of learning, more than anything realized in the West until the Enlightenment.

Besides Christianity was a unifying force and bulwark against Arab Muslim conquest. Sure it's had its lows, like the sacking of Constantinople, which ultimately led to the destruction of the Byzantines, and the various Inquisitions and "Holy Wars" fought in the name of the faith but were really just veiled consolidations of regional power...but on the whole it was a net positive for Europe.

I'm a rather secular individual but i'd rather live in the West where Christianity and the Greco-Roman ideals of a Republic hold sway than the theocratic nightmare you see endured in the Middle East and Sweden.

Pick two. Just because progress was made in spite of religious repression, doesn't mean your particular faith didn't actively impede said progress. How many people were murdered, exiled or otherwise silenced by the church?

Also saying "but the people who made these discoveries were religious believers themselves" makes no real difference, especially when you consider that they lived in a time where you could be burned alive for being a heretic or apostate.

That time has continued unto the present day in some religious cultures.

Thats not the point, antisemitism was intrinsic to both Christianity and Islam. Those typical Jewish traits everyone hates and has made Jews incredibly successful today were probably coping mechanisms. If you live in societies where the dominant culture sees you as the devil reincarnated, then you feel pressured to aqcuire power in these soceities to insure your peoples survival by being an intrinsic part of their economy, aka having a banking monpoly. Im sure many muslims and christians didnt want to eliminate the jewish threat since they controlled the money in these socieities even tho their religions have told them that Jews are evil subhumans. Jews depended on the greed and self interests of others for their survival. So I guess they were made to work harder than anyone to aqcuire wealth and to be of use in these antisemitic cultures.

The basis of modern science is the scientific method. The scientific method states that it is erroneous to make conclusions that are not supported by evidence. Hence that, since it is impossible to prove the non-existence of something, the notion of God may not be scientifically debunked. It could only be emotionally and irrationally debunked.

The "Dark period" was caused by a collapse of Roman society that had begun prior to the existence of Jesus.

Emperor Augustus had already seen Rome was beginning to collapse due to low birth rates before Jesus was even a thing.

Funnily enough, that chart means jackshit. Scientific papers are published wherever it's cheap and prestigeous (belence of two), and the place where article is published has no relation to where the research is made. For example, in the last few years a lot of research on space particles is published in China - and very few of that is done by Chineese.

All of you have to remember that without Christianity the Europeans would still be fucking savages and the Americas would be filled with cannibals and pagans. You have to remember that the roman catholic church is the one who gave work to the artists, philosophers, scientists, etc.

Christianity is the ONLY religion that actually unified an entire continent of people that hated each other, Europe is (was*) great because of Christianity, it was that common faith that kept the pagan and wicked religion of Islam out of Europe and made the white man a civilized society but also made him a ruthless warrior.

That's why the impostors hate so much the white race, they were the only ones that did not capitulate and the ones that took the legacy of the kingdom of heaven

Today, the Christianity is fragmented and this fragmentation was fabricated. With the heresy of Martin Luther and the french revolution and many other factors destroyed Christianity and with it, Europe.

The Roman Catholic Church is just a bunch of heretics, pedophiles, Freemasons and Jews.
The Orthodox Church is just as corrupt.
The Lutheran heretics are immerse into a mistake.
And the conservative groups that refuse to follow the Vatican II are fighting each other because of sabotage.

But Christianity has seen herself in worse situations.

I feel that someday, maybe 100 years maybe tomorrow the only true religion of peace will re-emerge and will cleanse the world of the pagan/satanic Islam and the jewish impostors.

No they weren't

There was almost no permissiveness in India/China. In India you had to literally memorize everything you were told and repeat it Verbatim. In China you had to pass a certain test with no room for creativity. It was all about memorization not about exploration/experimentation.

Christianity allowed all forms of scientific inquiry as far back as the 10th century thanks to the academic/religious system.

The notion that Christianity is inherently anti-scientific is fallacious

But so is the notion that Christianity has always supported science. Many Christian sects and groups did oppress and murder scientists

Hypatia of Alexandria was murdered by a Christian mob.
Giordano Bruno was executed partially because he believed in a "plurality of worlds"
Lucilio Vanini postulated that mankind evolved from apes and was subsequently executed by having his tongue cut out and strangled

I agree that atheists go too far in criticizing Christian persecution of science and scientists, but to completely whitewash the issue and act like Christians have always been tolerant of opposing thought processes is nonsensical
Galileo was undeniably persecuted and oppressed

It is obvious a LOT was lost after the fall of the Western Roman empire. Charlemagne was considerably less advanced than even Augustus in almost every fields. But this has very little to do with Christianity. The fall occurred because the system was at the end of its rope and the destruction was inevitable. Early Christians were indeed shit at preserving knowledge until monks took over around the 12th century. The crusades also managed to acquire some Roman knowledge preserved by Arabs.

Hypathia was a friend and supporter of Orestes as were many of her pupils, some of whom were influential Christians;
