Christianity did a lot to preserve knowledge that wasn't irreparably destroyed in the fall of the Roman Empire. Church's were institutions of learning, more than anything realized in the West until the Enlightenment.
Besides Christianity was a unifying force and bulwark against Arab Muslim conquest. Sure it's had its lows, like the sacking of Constantinople, which ultimately led to the destruction of the Byzantines, and the various Inquisitions and "Holy Wars" fought in the name of the faith but were really just veiled consolidations of regional power...but on the whole it was a net positive for Europe.
I'm a rather secular individual but i'd rather live in the West where Christianity and the Greco-Roman ideals of a Republic hold sway than the theocratic nightmare you see endured in the Middle East and Sweden.

It is obvious a LOT was lost after the fall of the Western Roman empire. Charlemagne was considerably less advanced than even Augustus in almost every fields. But this has very little to do with Christianity. The fall occurred because the system was at the end of its rope and the destruction was inevitable. Early Christians were indeed shit at preserving knowledge until monks took over around the 12th century. The crusades also managed to acquire some Roman knowledge preserved by Arabs.
