In the thousands of years of documented Eurasian history with hundreds of Kingdoms and Empires, there were a handful of successful local African Kingdoms that were somewhere on the civilisation scale above North American Natives but below Maori's, there were never any "Empires" that were comparable to anything that came out of Eurasia
There were also some successful city states on the East Coast of Africa that traded with the middle east and India.

Empire of Mali, with it's cultural center Timbuktu, is according to Wikipedia the biggest West-African Empire in all time and traded mainly in gold. It attracted arabian traders, who converted the Mali Emperor to Islam, and the Emperor sent back a huge amount of gold as gift to the arabian emissaries. Don't know anything about whether gold was used as a currency in Mali, but in fact it wasn't used as a currency by europeans because it was way too rare in Europe, so they used silver instead for their money. So that part is definitely false, but the value of gold naturally attracted the european imperialists and lead to the decline of the west african states ( I guess Mali fell apart way sooner, too lazy to look it up)
Never actually heard of an Empire of Kush, but WIkipedia calls it a mere kingdom and it doesn't sound very impressive
