At the core of islam (and some parts of radical chistianity still) there is the belief that morality is inspired by god (especially prevalent in the middle east) and that God/Allah's creation is perfect. This perfection means that the way it is should not change, we shouldn't change the natural order of things except if they deviate from said natural order and bring them back. Therefore, anything that tries to deviate from that so-called natural order (women's rights, human rights, gay rights) is viewed as offensive to the way things are supposed to be, contrary to the way god created the earth.
Also, people I know who believe in islam are in two groups, either they sorta mildly believe, or they have made their religious ideas part of their core identity.
If you mildly believe, you are usually a "bad" muslim in a number of ways, and infringe on muslim laws. Those people could be compatible with european society if there were few of them.
A lot however somehow have made being a muslim central to their being, it's their identity. Hence why they need to rub it in your face by wearing a head scarf.
I don't agree that it's secularism that is the only responsible for the incompatibility, existentialism is also a reason why muslims can't integrate in our societies. The message we give here and now is that there is no point or meaning to life, and you have to choose your own destiny, your own reason to live (often hedonism). If this way of thinking encounters people for whom there is only Allah, their entire being has been created by Allah, and they should respect him, it goes against this very freedom and flexibility. It just isn't compatible.
