There's nothing wrong with this, it helps people think in a more abstract way about numbers. Just intuitively doing additions doesn't teach you anything about math.

We commonly use a base-10 system, and these exercises are built around making that explicit.

It's accurate. If you read Lenin and the others, they explicitly say that Socialism is supposed to be the transitional state between Capitalism and Communism. Such a transition is necessary to them in order to overthrow class-society and confiscate the capital of the bourgeoisie. After it is confiscated by the Party-State, the wealth is supposed to be consumed to build the communist utopia.

In top universities per capita, the USA is below average for developed countries:
http://stats.areppim.com/stats/stats_unitop100percap_2013.htm

Additionally, the US gives weight in university rankings to the amount of external research funding secured which, given that most reseach funding in Europe comes from block grants, means that US universities dominate the list. The USA also has no metric for defining the quality of research, unlike the UK, for example, which runs regular Research Assessment Exercises.

Personally my "off the top of my head" mental process would be "28 is close to 25, 103 is close to 100, the difference is about 75", all of that would happen in a fraction of a microsecond to me, 75 seems completely reasonable and I'm actually pleasantly surprised on spending an extra half-second actually doing the math that it's the exact answer. If it were truly an "estimation" problem then the wording is absolutely shitty, it doesn't even mention the number of significant figures to estimate to, it just asks "is this reasonable", yes it's fucking "reasonable", reasonability is subjective anyway how can you even use that as a basis for correctness of a mathematics problem, literally the most objective school of study there is.

>adding needless complexity
It's not needless, and it's not complex. There are additional steps, but each step is simpler in of itself. You teach kids to tackle more complex problems by breaking them down into easily digestible chunks. The sooner you get them into that mindset, the better, because eventually you will face math that is beyond intuition. If, however, by that time you are used to tackling problems using a succession of simple algorithms, you will have zero problems.

Those factors are all contingent in terms of whether they determine that US universities are subpar compared to other Western universities.

Regardless, not a single country on that graph that is above the US has a population that even approaches a tenth of that of the US. You have to compare several European countries altogether whose combined populations equal that of the US if you want to be fair. I can otherwise list individual US states, like Massachusetts, or even cities with a population higher than that of Switzerland, like New York City, and say, "Look, the per capita representation beats your European countries."

Of course. But as I said, this is "thing that happens in my brain in a microsecond". It takes an extra millisecond for the conscious training to kick and and understand whether 2X where X>5 should be rounded down 25 or up to 30. It's the same psychological process where marketers price everything at $699 instead of $700 even though there's little real difference, because the brain sees that first 6 and instantly thinks of the lower round number (600) rather than the 700, even though we know RATIONALLY exactly what's going on.

So to reiterate, if someone said to me, "Hey I brought 103 apples and people ate 28 of them, how many we got left?" the first thing I would say would be "Uh 75 I guess?" Very reasonable to me.

After midnight (00) it goes to 01, 02 etc, until it reaches 12 again and continues with 13, 14, etc. Normal time, but not in the analogue format. Sad to say but if you go to a bad school over here, you will get a dumb teacher. At least the old algorithms are fool proof. I could see this resulting in children who can't add without a calculator.

I had to take a long time but I agree with the Aussie [>>68869549], that I add numbers that way in my head. But to do on paper in this way seems way too obtrusive and complicated. The scheme we can see in the picture [>>68869549] is universal and makes an exchange much more easier. By using this scheme you can check the steps someone took fairly quickly because it is standardized across the board that way.

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DESTROY SUCH SIMPLE ORDER?

If you have a bad teacher, it doesn't matter what system you use, you will turn out mostly innumerate children. The old system was certainly doing so. I don't fault them for trying a new system to try and get some improvement. "Making a ten", for example, is not a bad way to do additions. If the kids are made to understand it, it will enable them to do additions just fine.

We'll see how it shakes out. Probably, there will be no effect: the rich will still have good teachers who are able to explain the logic behind "making a ten", and the poor will be taught to ape answers to the test.
>>
>>68872455
>I don't fault them for trying a new system to try and get some improvement

the solution to bad teachers is to dissolve the teachers' unions. Schools must be able to fire bad teachers.

That has been tried in certain US states, and had also no effect. By contrast, heavily unionized teacher nations like Belgium score really high on educational rankings.

When it comes to education in the US, and also in problem schools in Europe, the real issue is socialization. You're stuck with a certain population we shan't name that is incapable of functioning normally in school - violent, disruptive, ... Bad teachers can't teach them, good ones might uplift a handful, but then they they burnout and move on to another school.
>>
>>68870638
I guess because addition to 10 is already too difficult?

You take your number 12 and round it up to 5 then 10. Then you go from 10 to 10. Once you got to 30, you just need to add 2 to get the 32. You then know the number you had to add to 12 to get 32.
It's the difference between the two.

I agree it's kind of a better way to understand the process of resolving math problems.
But for kids that already understood their math class, it's going to be really boring.
It's just mass education at work, I guess. It's not good for smarter people.

The other issue is that the teachers are dumb, mathematically speaking.
It's a fact in France, the math teachers were the worst college students in math classes. Though, they were the good high school students. They're just good at studying hard and applying procedure. The ones with a deep understanding do research, but are weirdo you would not put your kids in front of, that's also a fact.

8 + 10 + 2 = 20

I don't think it's as comprehensible as the good old table we were taught where the ones and than the tens are added together.
You try to get the first number to a nice round number. So from 12 to 20 the difference is 8. Than you add the 12 and the 8 and you get 20. Now you go to the next nice full number which is 30. From 30 to 32 the difference is only 2.

No argument there, though that's already true now in most cases. As I understand it, though, CC is a base upon which teacher can expand; if they are teaching smart kids who've picked it up, they can move on to more complex issues

As to dumb teachers, wouldn't this rather help in that regard? I think part of this effort was to make teaching math idiot-proof.

What is clear, however, is that they fucked up the execution. All of these word problems, convoluted phrases, newspeak... that's all useless crap. But some of the underlying mechanism are a step in the right direction imho.

Let's just state the obvious: CC is mostly about tackling the problem of how to educate really dumb ghetto kids who literally don't know anything. And since you can't profile them, it has to be done through a common curriculum. It's a laudable goal as far as I am concerned; if you're not ethnically cleansing them, might as well try and make em more useful to the labor market.

Newspeak, that's why.

Commie bullshit like this was tried 20+ years ago. Some new special program, some magical cure-all idea from fuck-knows-who, everybody needs to follow this new standard because it's flawlessly perfect and anyone saying otherwise is a heretic.

One thing they tried was combining 1st+2nd+3rd years in one huge room, and telling them to share pencils communally. The system is perfect, so anyone caught without a pencil is punished for failure to network. 3rd year kids run around mugging the 1st year kids and then the 1st year kids are perpetually racking up disciplinary actions and having their parents dragged in to be bitched at by bureaucrats.

I saw a middle school science teacher do nothing besides talk about how god hates gays, all day every day. One single exception: over about a two-week span, his 100ish students all built 1.5m long cannons out of tin cans, and launched projectiles across large fields with them. In middle school, in the 90s. These people become village legends and keep their jobs for life, and if they're already doing it then they're going to keep on embezzling forever too.

All the bureaucrats and dozens of the teachers embezzle, and kids are left being corralled like farm animals. A big group of people launched a series of massive lawsuits but they got muscled out and bankrupted. Union's collective bargaining agreement has the teacher's union paying the district's legal fees so the bureaucrats eat 0% of the flak they draw.

South inland California, by the way. But I think the same one law firm represents school districts all the way up to the bay area.

If you think of education in terms of what is purely needed then you don't even need to go to school. Take a gangster from the hood for instance. He doesn't need to learn any math because he can use a calculator on his phone. He only needs to learn enough reading to be able to open apps on his phone. He only needs to be able to speak well enough to buy guns and make drug trades. Education isn't about teaching people what they need, it is about "expanding their horizons."

Education shows a person that there is a lot more to life than first meets the eye. This is why all these fathers from the hood get back from prison and try to get their kids to go to school and get STEM degrees and leave the hood. They learned the hard way that there is more to life than gang-banging and that their little kid doesn't need to learn this the hard way, they can just have their kid go to school, learn math, study some literature on the government's dime.

Kind of triggered by this post to be honest senpai.

I pretty much doubt it. Not even joking. And no, I'm serious about it. If your child fails to attend school, you'll get fined. One christian family actually fled to the United States because of this, but the Obama administration sent them back because they weren't persecuted in Germany.

This is a picture of how plugged into the system your country is.

Countries less plugged in eat horrible things to survive and work 10x harder for 1% as much stuff. Countries more plugged in have degeneracy and pointless opulence.

But why? Do they not feel pain?

As the question says, you add 4 to 26 to get to the nearest 10, 30

then, you take 4 from the 17 because 4 is what you added to 26 to get to the nearest 10.

Then, you add up the numbers to get your result, and it's slightly easier to do because one of the numbers ends in a 0.

Effectively, for two numbers x+y, you are going to add n to x to get to the nearest 10, and then compute the value of (x+n)+(y-n). It seems unintuitive because it's so easy to add up small numbers like 26 and 17.
