Had news from other source that confirms that SAA is assaulting the northern part of the town, so may be true. Also ISIS apparently claims to have taken back the ruins as well as the citadel but is not very likely to be true, still worrying.

They have been trapped there for a few years, being resupplied by air as they currently control the military airport. I'm not sure how it really started as I wasn't following the war at the time, but I do know that there are some Republican Guard stationed there alongside regular SAA. From what I've heard they are pretty malnourished and under-supplied because Syria just doesn't have the capacity to airlift enough supplies for that many troops for that long. Not sure if Russia is helping resupply them, but AA is a big threat around there.
A while ago a video went up showing some Replublican Guard guy's eating scraps of leftover bread and complaining about it, which shows it is pretty bad, but the video was taken down pretty quickly. Basically they are well dug in with some of Syria's best troops, and are a high priority for SAA because it keeps the pressure from ISIS away from Damascus, they keep them tied up basically. Heard some elite unit was being sent there as part of an upcoming operation, maybe an offensive to link up with the Palmyra push.
