I was a V22 Crewchief who was on TRAP standby this time last year in Kuwait/Iraq. On Dec 24, 2014 the Jordanian pilot Muath Al-Kasasbeh was somehow shot down over Raqqah (take it from me, after satellite examination and talking personally to my CO, the secret is another Jordanian shot him down by accident. I dont have a way to prove this info this is just what high brass was whispering among our pilots and crewchiefs at the time)
Since I was on standby that morning I sprinted to my Osprey and started her up as the pilots soon followed. Pilots werent even dressed in their flightsuits b/c of the rush (fucking pilots kek they were watching National Lampoons Xmas Vacation in their hooch) We were a whole 3 hrs of flight away from Syria and we knew this guy we had to rescue was surely fucked.
Sure enough 2 hrs later DASC got on the radio and told us to abort, they had confirmed that ISIS captured this guy. I started to tear up, feeling like a massive failure... even though there was nothing I could do about it or that we did wrong.
We diverted to Baghdad to wait further word, and went to the chowhall. There in the chowhall I watched on CNN ISIS pulling the pilot out of a fucking pond and cheering. They tweeted the photos. The pilot looked scared out of his mind, he had stripped all of his clothes save his flightsuit and apparently tried to hide UNDERFUCKINGWATER. There is no way we could have found him even if we made it in time to Syria if he didnt have his GPS radio.
I still feel pained when I think about it.
I cried on the 4th of July when some other ex marine friends of mine went with me to a brewery. We drank a few 20oz bombers at my house so we were already drunk, and at the brewery we drank even more.
