I had been a Christian for all my life until about a year ago. I felt rather unconvinced about the explanations I was given to many questions I had been forming throughout my life that have to do with religion.
Ultimately, I decided to become an atheist because I saw that many of the people I knew who also claimed to be Christians never really seemed to take it seriously (myself included).
However, I don't deny the possibility of the existence of a more powerful being. I don't think he's the all-powerful, all-knowing, spaceless, timeless, always watches what you do, etc. God most religions seem to promote.
If anything, I believe that maybe the Universe was unintended. Maybe it was made by a more powerful being, but I don't believe he made it because he wants to show how much he loves me.
Nonetheless, I feel rather empty now. As if everything I do is pointless and I'm just wasting my time until the day I die.

At the beginning of Christianity, the apostles received different authorities from Christ to begin the church. They began the church. Unanimously all early Christian writing is supportive of the notion that those apostles passed on their offices and with them their authorities given to them before all the apostles were murdered. This apostolic succession and authority is what the church is founded and based on. Later on, one bishop did not agree with a council's decision on the nature of Christ and left to do his own thing. This, plus much kingdom politics and lesser issues caused the massive split of the early church. Roman Christendom became known as Catholicism and Byzantine Christendom became known as Orthodoxy.

I never quite got this logic. The pope is not always right and there have been many bad popes before (not to say anything of Pope Francis here) and so to not become part of the church because of the guy in the highest earthly office is a bit random to me. One just doesn't follow the other. The grace from the sacraments and from doctrine and the authority of the church and even the papal authority arise from no man nor their moral excellence but from God.

You may argue that the true leader is god and his son but we cannot disagree that the Pope has massive influence in the followers of Catholicism. Yeah, we take baskets of food to the church on Saturday before Easter and the priest walks around and sprays holy water on people. Then the food becomes holy and we take it back home. We eat it during breakfast on Sunday.
