What majors are trash?
Is the degree meaningless?
>>
I dual degreed in philosophy and political science and I was hired in less than a month after graduating. None of you have any excuses for your failures

I majored in sociology and somehow got a decent job 2 months after graduating in December. Also got into grad school with full funding and no tuition for next year. I'm surprised, I thought I was screwed.

I have a degree in graphic design and got a job while studying (payed job, not intern) and after finishing I had 3 consecutive job offers. Now the problem is not having a job, is earning the same that a freshman would with 12 years of experience.

Consider becoming a truck driver.

No seriously; because *everyone* considers it an undesirable job, if you put in time, it is possible to make some serious cash and have relatively long term employment stability (The basis of the economy is moving stuff around); if you can deal with people looking down on your because you weren't a tryhard and didn't go to Medical school instead.

If you need money, that's probably the easiest and most direct way of getting it. Good luck on trying to pull chicks with that job title though.
>>
I have my chem degree but I'm not entirely sure what to do. Most of the jobs are pretty menial never ending GC on oil here, and they usually prefer people with a simple diploma so they can pay them less. But grad school is ridiculously fucking expensive. A buddy of mine is doing it and he's at $80k of debt and just finished his 2nd year, and he even had what little scholarships they offer.
>>
I'm making comfortable single living numbers with a graduate degree in Clinical Psychology

Don't do it unless you're willing to go for a Ph.D. or Psy.D. though. Also if you're not willing to get shit thrown at you in internships. Also if you don't honestly believe in helping people from all walks of life.

Doubt it. Driverless cars are going to start popping up within 10 years, and are going to become common not long after that.

Got a software engineering degree from a large State University.

I had jobs thrown at me even with my weak programming skills, started with 61k and benefits...

Software Engineering is in demand these days, it is similar to Computer Science but focuses more on the different processes and life cycles, programming is still a part of it, but it uses techniques and practices to make the programming more accurate and more efficient.

I got a degree in geology back in 2008 and now work as a hydrogeologist. It pays pretty well, though I have hgeard some of the experienced consultants get paid what can almost be described as residuals on wells etc.

You can't really just do whatever you want with a degree, or at least it's recommended you do more. A degree isn't meaningless and in fact it is down right required for many things today, but it also isn't enough.

Ask departments to break down the branches and fields and which industries, positions, and skills are common. You can even look on something like Linkedin and see what people that have succeeded in those fields have done, such as certification for procedures or training, equipment skills, or specific computer program skills. Do work part time or summer internships in related businesses so you can say you are familiar with what is normal.
Join a professional society to have access to market info to understand what you can do to give yourself an edge.
>>
Best thing to major in is having a friend with a job. Preferably a friend in a management or supervising position. Almost guaranteed position with agreeable hours and conditions.

Anything else and ya fucked m8 see you at the bread lines.
>>
>>68799567
If you want to be middle manager your life go for engineering. Otherwise do whatever you want. Having a degree is important, the major is not.

The problem is too many think that getting the degree is the hardest part. A degree can open many doors, but on the otherside of each door are even more doors. I went to Imperial College which was a pure STEM university, I know some who were brilliant at engineering but ended up working in shitty dead end engineering jobs, yet others who weren't as good but ended up going all over the world earning shit loads. The latter guys leveraged more than just their degrees to get their jobs. Unless you are seriously shit hot a good degree isn't 'enough' nowadays.

You'd have yo be fucking retarded not to. Railroad pension in the US is unreal. Great benefits and good pay too in a wide variety of positions. You can get as a conductor, signals maintainer, equipment operator, apprentice mechanic, carman, or more with just your grade 12. A lot of railroads will pay for you to take night/distance classes too while you work for them. Not to mention you have the backing of a large corrupt union and are basically unable to be fired unless you really fuck up.

Chinks aren't intelligent. They take pride in the fact they get away with cheating all the time. Cheating isn't seen as a bad thing in Chink culture. They're also heavily pressure by their families to succeed. I knew a chink once that thought he was a genius, but he was just a cutdicklet little manlet who had a tiger mom that pushed him too hard. All of them.

So how are you supposed to get a job in 2016 /pol/?

Through connections.

Got a math and econ double at a pretty respectable university.
No job offers. Had to ask my parents' friend for a job at his company.

Started at $40k. Became the company's in-house customs broker. Now making $250k.

It's all about connections, man. Companies can hire immigrants and foreigners for slave wages to do the important and hard work. Why would they care about your skills and merit?

Dude, I work in the import/export business (customs broker) and I don't know what you're talking about, man.

Are you an LTL trucker or a FCL trucker?
There is so much congestion at terminals that you can send a FCL trucker in during the afternoon and he would out-gate at 3 AM. Then he has to wake up at 6 AM so he can deliver at 8 AM.
Then there's all the complaints from consignee's about detention charges.
It's a giant headache.
Of all the agents in the transportation field, truckers give me the most headache.

There are no job openings in the actuarial field.

Also, I would not recommend it. Have you seen what the SOA is doing with the exams?
Compare exam questions pre-2000 with questions post-2000. The questions became a lot less theoretical and more straightforward (Short way of saying it got easier).

Then look at what SOA is doing with exam MFE. They're getting rid of stochastic calculus, brownian motions, interest rate models, and everything in the harder-half of the exam syllabus.

SOA only cares about money and getting more females and minorities into the field. The exams are still difficult now, but it's getting easier every year. There are no so many people vying for jobs.

>>

CS = cryptography, AI, complexity theory, information theory, quantum computing, optimization theory.
SE = code monkey with a side of management.
>>

>>
>>68807735

I interviewed for both of my positions as a data scientist with a PhD in pure math and no other marketable skills (hadn't done any serious programming in 8+ years and hadn't taken a statistics class since undergrad). It didn't matter in the slightest because getting a PhD in math means you can learn anything there is to learn for any job they could want you to do.

So yes, epsilon-delta skills are important in the sense that if you can do math, you can learn almost anything there is to be learned for the purposes of a job.

Being lazy is conquerable if you're very smart. Being depressed is a toss-up and depends on the depth of your depression and how it manifests itself.

Being outright stupid is probably a no-go, but you don't have to be a transcendental genius to get a PhD in Math/Physics/CS. Whatever you lack in brains you'll have to make up for double and triple-time with dedication and work ethic, though.

There is an IQ floor for these subjects.
While someone with a meager 125 IQ could potentially get a PhD in math or physics with a ton of effort and studying, there is no way someone with a 115 IQ can achieve the same feat unless the grad school stresses memorization over original content.

There really isn't.

I take it you've never interacted with an average Chinese math grad student? They're usually thicker than hogshit but have a much lower attrition rate than domestic students because they live a spartan lifestyle that is completely unconscionable to the average non-Chinese grad student.

The idea that there is a magic number that determines whether or not someone can do math research is pretty laughable, and the fact that you honestly believe it makes me think you've never done any yourself.

>>
>>68809575

>IQ is not synonymous with brains.

IQ is highly correlated with g-factor.
There is a single abstract "general intelligence" that controls your performance in every endeavor you do regardless of how different they may appear. IQ attempts to measure that "general intelligence".
People with high IQs tend to be better than people with lower IQs at everything.
Contrary to popular belief, math skills and reading skills are not orthagonal. Neither are writing skills and sports reflexes.
All of these skills/abilities are determined by your underlying general intelligence and all of these skills are correlated with one another.

Being good at taking IQ tests is also part of general intelligence.

Sorry for your loss, friend. I'm actually FSA and it's infuriating what the SOA is doing. It's so blatantly obvious that they're making the exams easier to ensure more women and minorities pass the exams. Every entry-level job posting you see on job sites is meant for women and minorities, not white males. You see the same company hiring an entry-level actuary for about 5 months until they finally have a female or black applicant. Then they reject your application.

Thankfully, I found a better and easier job. I do like mentioning that I passed all actuarial exams. I see that it gathers a lot of respect in the academic and business world.

Everything you've listed were just additional courses you could take a few classes as program electives.

Teachers are paid alright in NYC.

They start at $55k and cap-out at $125k.
They have great benefits and a *70% pension plan* given that you've worked long enough.

Lots of teachers live in wealthy suburban areas like long island. Low teacher pay is a myth.

Best ways to get a job are to be really good at something, or be willing to do something nobody else will do. Trades are pretty good since all the dumb shits are swarming for womens studies degrees and not going into those fields so demand is pretty high.

Or fuck, if you give zero shits and don't want to go to school or do anything at all, go into trucking. Long haul in particular pays well, nobody wants to do it so its always available, all you gotta do is drive for a few weeks, chill at home for a week or two, drive for a few more, and so on.

Otherwise, if you want to grab a STEM type field, best bet is probably under the Technology fields. Asians will school you on math no matter how hard you try, Science takes a very specific mindset and passion to actually enjoy. No real experience with engineering, don't know anybody who's gone down that path and not decided to just do something else by the time they finished.

I'm doing a 2 year softwar engineering program myself, its a bit of a more practical computer science area, you aren't expect to know the mechanical logic of the hardware, your taught the skills for developing over the life cycle of a program. If you like fixing problems, its a decent field to go into, because everything you do will likely cause bugs and problems that need to be fixed. Database administration is a good one, lots of people don't think about that one and it pays pretty well and is in really high demand as companies need to collect more and more user data.

Just whatever you do, avoid subjective fields and historical fields if you really want to ensure getting a job out the gate, and any field that involves just studying the behavior of something is probably a poor choice as well. If you've a passion for German literature or Spanish culture, just study that yourself, you don't need a school to indulge passions.

Thanks for confirming. For the record, a CS program is composed of (take any college rating ordered by CS and work your way down):
Mandatory programming 1 and 2
Mandatory math courses (usually math department)
Some low level course (OS and/or embedded, or a course about writing OS drivers that is typically separate from the OS course)
2 software engineering courses (e.g. database and software quality assessment)
School specialty (for example, operational research, numerical algorithms, stochastic programming, or statistical modeling)
1 data structures class
1 algorithms class
1 theoretical computer science class (typically automata theory and elementary computation theory and information theory)

This is around 2/3 to 3/4 of required credits. The rest are taken as in-domain choice courses as well as a few out-of-domain choices.

In-domain choices include: bioinformation, quantum computing, simulation, stochastic modeling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, signal processing, computer vision, natural language processing, graphs and networks, optimization, numerical algorithms, etc.

If no SE program is offered alongside the CS program at the school, SE is taken to be a path of CS. In that case, CS options will also include additional SE classes. Everyone is aware that these are SE classes, not CS classes.

Your school is probably the only university I've ever heard of (even amongst no-name garbage universities, which group your university absolutely belongs to) that puts IT in a CS department, let alone gives mandatory IT courses in a CS track.

>>

I took a while off after graduation to tour the country, but started the job search immediately after getting home. I get a lot of interviews, but none that have ended up with an offer. According to a recruiter I talked to just a few hours ago, the mistake I was making was going for places with a lot of competition, like big employers and universities that offer extremely generous benefits. The talent shortage is very real, even if the only reason they actually use the H1B workers is to fire existing workers they view as too expensive. Companies that actually need a Pajeet can't get him because they can't afford the lawyers and other fees involved.

I know some philosophy majors get hired for very good pay in work involving corporate ethics, but with the high amount of students graduating with these majors, how can they all (or even a decent number) get jobs that pay well? How many corporate ethics people could they possibly need, especially when ethics don't seem to matter any more? What other jobs can they get?
>>
>>68813074
Exactly it doesn't matter how smart and industrious you are, you can not compete with slaves. The accountants don't care about quality or your career, they're operating the company in the most profitable way. I guess they've figured out that despite the loss of quality from the dindus, they still make more money than hiring natives.

You're right, it comes down to Jewish nepotism, white-male mandated discrimination laws, or knowing someone.

You only get a job by having connections. So, if your parents or extended family don't have connections with an employer in your field of choice, then you have to get an internship to build up some of your own connections. Other than that, you better hope you're graduating from an ivy league school.

The degree is largely useless, but it proves to hiring managers and other HR people that you can persevere and accomplish your goals. STEM degrees are more valuable than humanities, arts, etc. which truly have no value unless you're going to get a graduate degree in it and then teach it.
