In return, the person you help will be inspired to tip you for it.
But remember that there will always be assholes out there from all walks of life, or you may in fact run into someone who is having a very bad day. So what? If you let that change who you are and if you let it change you into a bitter, angry little man who constantly blames those better off than him due to jealously than you're also part of the problem. Negativity breeds negativity, and vice versa.
Most people, however, are going to be nice to you. You just need to look beyond outward appearances and you need to realize that the world isn't divided into strict castes of poor and nice, middle class and average and rich and greedy / evil. there's more to serving than "take the order, bring it to the kitchen to get it made, then bring it to the customer" actually, you know, talking with them and trying to make them feel like they had a good time at the restaurant instead of just wasting time to get food they could have either made at home or got quicker somewhere else is a whole other element. now times that by 5 or 10 for each additional table you get. I actually work at a restaurant, so I know serving is not easy. tips are a signal of gratitude, not something i expect to get. i work my hardest to make sure i will get them. and no, i dont sit at the garage and chat with my mechanic, so his job is just to fix my car quickly and get it back on the road.
