If you want to register a gun for self-protection, on top of passing all the tests and paying some dough, you have to prove you're in high degree of danger. So practically the only people not in some armed force that get them for protection are some businessmen and politicians.
You can also apply as a sportsman or weapon collector, which makes it possible to get a license without such bullshit, but it's hard still.

Glocks are popular for a reason. You can literally just put the damn thing in the dish washer if you want.
On the other end of the spectrum is a nice (expensive) 1911. There's really no better trigger for fun, fast, accurate shooting. But it's heavy and low capacity.
