It would screw up the electoral college and result in a near-guarantee of Democratic power in the Presidency.
See, for the last 6 elections or so, the blue states in pic related have voted Democrat each time. They're very reliable electoral votes for the Dems, and it puts them quite close to the magical number of 50% plus 1.
If you split up Florida into two states, you take those 29 electoral votes which could go either way, and split them half and half between the Dems and Repubs.
Instead of 242/270, they get a near-guaranteed 257/270. Combined with how many swing states there are, and how few they'd need to get over the line, it would make things extremely difficult for the Republicans.
