The 80's 90's was this period where you could kinda be a "mysterious guy" or have these interesting experiences with different people. Because when you met people with unique hobbies or kind of a weird personality or quirks, it was a thing to talk about with others. Now it's just like "Hey look at these 1000 videos online!", everyone has access to porn, everyone can access these experiences, so it's nothing special. Being on television used to be something to brag about.
There's just no mystery or magic left that existed in the 80's and 90's.

There were just as many unhappy people as there is now. The difference was the lack of visibility (no social networking) and a generally positive media. Cynicism is more abundant these days, BUT a lack of cynicism only implies happiness, while it simply does not document unhappiness.
This is like people looking back on Victorian times and wondering why people stopped being moral and gentlemanly/ladylike. The answer is that they never were, but the historians who wrote the books and the writers were socially conservative and wanted to portray the world in a better light than it was.

There's an amazing resonance between my childhood and the childhood of US kids who grew up in the 90s like we did. I always found that fascinating for genuine reasons. Nevermind the media, it was nothing compared to what we have now in terms of penetration/oversaturation - there was a shared experience because the fundamental underlying psyche was the same. We were all "normal" for lack of better term, and our childhood and development went along natural lines. It was organic. It wasn't a set of imposed bullshit like the current world is. For nostalgia purposes, here's something my group really liked. Basically everyone, male and female, watched and loved this show. Look at it, young ones. Look at the vid and think, think how utterly impossible it is today for something like this to exist. I can say that growing up the experience was more human. If you were over at someone's house you might also meet their neighbor and all play video games together, play tag, etc. I don't think a lot of kids are lucky enough to live in a nice place and have their parents trust them to run around neighborhoods and go over to other houses.
I can't really say for the adult experience but I know it was better, more relaxed. You could go outside wearing huge glasses and stupid clothes and nobody outside of a country club would laugh at you. You could get a regular job without submitting to drug tests and outright scrutiny as long as your attitude was good; now it's all about image and corporate policy that owns you.
Also we didn't have information shoved down our throats 24/7 unless you were a fucking faggot and listened to rush limbaugh every day. You might watch celebrity gossip and then 60 minutes every week, take in that information and form your own opinion. I remember after 9/11 I was for the war, and my dad was against it. Later we had internet and a proliferation of information, I was against the war and my dad was for it.
