It isn't. Canadians spent so much time separated from Europe that they forgot they were Europeans. Then they started fetishizing foreign cultures to the point of forgetting they already had local cultures of their own, in the form of English/Scottish/Irish/French diaspora. Then they made the mistake of thinking that a country as large and sparsely populated as Canada could ever have a unified national identity, and tried to rally the nation to cast off their perceived shackles of British influence through a pop-art flag and the wholesale rejection of the history and traditions which built the country in the first place.
