I went to junior high school with a borderline retard named Kendall Green. He disappeared shortly before high school started. Ten years later, I saw him working one of the deathtraps (i.e., "rides") at a carnival. Can't say much beyond that. He wasn't a particularly bad person when we were kids, but he smelled to high heaven. All told, I guess it made sense he ended up where he did. He's probably rotting in a shallow grave somewhere as I type this.
It's about time we started talking about trickster carnies.

I grew up in NYC so it was mostly spics and arabs running them. But I also went to county fairs upstate a few times and most people there were just like you describe.
back in early 1900's, and a hundred years before, the biggest carnivals and circuses were owned by Jewish familys. but laws were made restricting freak shows and oddities, so the Jews did not make any more money. they were smart, however, and started to make movies (the newest entertainment technology at the time).
