If you dislike USA's world leader status, you should look at more recent events.
When the USSR was going to be dismantled, the deal was for NATO to also be dismantled, so that all nation states can go their own way.
One side held their end of the bargain, the other didnt. So now NATO, and in turn USA, rules the world with no USSR left to oppose them.
Not that it was doing a good job in the first place, but better than nothing.
Also, you should consider Pax Americana. Since the USA took over control of world affairs, its allies in Europe have not seen any war for a long period of time. Historically europeans would fight each other all the time.
