It's amazing the stories I hear from older people who used to vacation in Mexico. They would go in to the real Mexico and be safe, as opposed to today where people just hang out in a resort drinking with other Americans, which you can do.... in America.

I've been there. It is pretty poor, I'll say that, but the locals are generally friendly and it seemed to be a generally okay country to live in. Almost completely self-sustaining energy wise because of geothermal, and although it's poor, everyone has a fucking cell phone for some reason so they're not THAT bad off.
I travelled in central and South America for 6 months when I was a little younger. So my observations are about 4 years old. However, Costa Rica was one of the better countries I visited. Poor, yes, but it was a lot less socialist and the people in general seemed a lot happier with their lot in life. They see the steady effects of capitalism and a government that is actually interested in improving the country rather than themselves. Considering most countries in the area are either full on socialist or ruled by a military junta it was a pleasant surprise. The villagers in Venezuala, Guatemala, and Ecuador were straight nigger-tier and were not safe to be around. In Costa Rica they were all really friendly and helpful, although most of them were trying to sell something. The women are fucking goblins tho but that's par for the course down there.

Costa Rican here. Most of what has been said in this thread is pretty much spot on. The biggest problem right now keeping the country in the shitter is too big of a government and the collapse of the social service aparatus. True, universal health care and other gibs me dats helped us to get ahead of other countries in the region at first. As the population grew and the Nicaraguans began to pour in however, the system simply hasn't been able to keep up. Hospitals have waiting lists that are literally years long. So good luck with that tumor, Pablo. The government has become too big and poorly administrated. Millions of dollars go to waste in government salaries of institutions that literally do nothing (some government institutions even have overlapping roles, how fucked up is that). Hopefully, people have been waking up to this problem, but right now the country is on the verge of disaster.
