Times change and Italy still has a good military. In the 15th century Milan made half of Europe's armors (the other big armory was in Nürnberg) and many military innovations were made in Italy. Even terms like "corporal" come from Italian.
As for Greece they literally stopped being relevant after the Romans conquered them. They haven't even had an army for 600 years since the Turks ruled them so that explains everything.

The black death was one of the major reasons why the renaissance happened when it did. Such a massive amount of the workforce died off in such a short timespan, the cost of labor skyrocketed and the Italian economy grew like a motherfucker to levels not seen before the fall of Rome.
The city of Rome was pretty much a desolate ghost town until the 10th century until the papacy started getting its shit together.
