What's the point of having so many states, and why such shitty borders? Were some of our earliest politicians using them to secure votes, similar to gerrymandering?

The reason there are so many states was to keep the number of slave states vs free states equal.
The original colonies also did not trust each other very much, and wanted to maintain their independence, which is why you have such a large States Rights vs Federal Rights argument during the formative years.
That's why there are so many tiny ass states on the east coast.

States in the US each have a distinct culture and identity, whether you choose to believe it or not. Sure, we might all have the same Applebee's and TGI Fridays and Burger Kings in our towns, but everybody is different.
Not to mention there is too much banter between states to ever integrate them.
Texas and Oklahoma together? Nope.
California and Nevada? Not a chance in hell.
