>“Ukraine is a country that affects us far less than it affects other countries in NATO and yet we’re doing all of the lifting,” Trump said. “They’re not doing anything. And I say, ‘Why is it that Germany’s not dealing with NATO on Ukraine? Why is it that other countries that are in the vicinity of Ukraine, why aren’t they dealing? Why are we always the one that’s leading, potentially the third world war with Russia.’”

>Trump declared U.S. involvement in NATO may need to be significantly diminished in the coming years, breaking with nearly seven decades of consensus in Washington. “We certainly can’t afford to do this anymore,” Trump said, adding later, “NATO is costing us a fortune and yes, we’re protecting Europe with NATO, but we’re spending a lot of money.”

>“I do think it’s a different world today and I don’t think we should be nation-building anymore,” Trump said. “I think it’s proven not to work and we have a different country than we did then. We have $19 trillion in debt. We’re sitting, probably, on a bubble. And it’s a bubble that if it breaks, it’s going to be very nasty. I just think we have to rebuild our country.
>>
>>68358979
He's right. Also we need to get out of the UN.

the funny thing is that he and bernie are both alarmists, but for very different reasons.

the sad thing is that they are both correct.

but I think Trump has far better leadership potential, and might actually accomplish something, whereas a Sanders presidency would be worse than Jimmy Carter's.

Western Europe admittedly does a lot of whining and not a lot of military spending. Eastern Europeans besides Russians and a few butthurt Balkan states fucking love America and Americans and spend a lot, I'd say they deserve help.
>>

In what universe is 30 AK rifle from the 60's and 5 non-operational T-45 tanks considered spending?

Actually USA did not do a shit about Ukraine.
>>
>>68361668
Can you back this up with facts?
>>
NATO is a MESS
>>
Well, the benefit of doing all the lifting in NATO is that we have the most control.

I don't think it should be dismantled, but it is a lot less crucial than it used to be during the cold war, so it could probably do with some pruning.
>>
>>68361919
But that's not true. Poland for instance is very capable. It's countries like Germany that only have a few non operational vehicles and female defence ministers with no military experience.
>>
For å country this close to Russia, Nato is the sole reason we didn't flip full on commie during the 60s.

I don't fear today's russia, they aren't as bad as they often are portrayed, but when it matters national security you need to think decades ahead.

A dismantled Nato would be interesting, for good or worse

Fucking hell, he's right and I'm a Brit lefty supporting the Green Party.

NATO is nothing but the USA's poodle and an unnecessary and incredibly expensive relic of the Cold War. The actions of NATO have only made the world a more dangerous place and us a target for terrorists. We need out.

You really need to look hard at how scare tactics and lies have been used to justify the continued existence of NATO. After all, arms manufacturing corporations, military-industrial complex and the member armies have vast amounts of power and wealth invested in it.

Be realistic Latvia, NATO would do fuck all but be deeply concerned if Russia decided to invade you.

In what way are you so important that NATO (USA) would risk a war with Russia? You are looking at the wrong people for defence. You need to beef up your own army, which for a small country like you would be tough, but you have neighbours you could join with who face the same threat. I really think Eastern and Central Europe need to have their own organization, an extension of the V4 maybe? At this point I'm not sure Russia will be your biggest threat in 30 years though.

I'd say he's at least partially right, though. Poland's military is a lot stronger than a lot of people give it credit for. They spend a higher % of their GDP on their military than most other countries in Europe, and whereas Germany's spending has been going lower and lower, Poland's military spending has getting higher and higher, and is likely going to continue to rise. They're currently in the process of a big military modernization program. They just ordered a bunch of Leopard 2's, for example, and are revamping their small-arms inventory with a lot of domestic designs. As a whole, they're slowly phasing out a lot of their older, shittier Soviet equipment and supplanting it with some pretty good stuff.

If you don't understand the purpose of alliances then there is no point in talking to you. Russia is a threat to a America in more ways than a simple existential threat to American territory, and it is stupid to think that alliances should not be maintained just because an ISIS or Russian land invasion of America isn't going to happen. You are also ignoring that the countries we are talking about do pay their fair share and Trump is not even talking about them. If you're talking about the Germans who have many American bases and don't even have a combat ready military I would agree with you but countries like the UK and Poland do contribute.

When will this Russians will invade Europe meme die? Sure there are some who want to ressurect the old borders of the SU, but they are a minority. The second problem Russia would have in steamrolling into Europe is the V4. Poland is modernizing and enlarging their army, and expanding their domestic arms production, not including what the other V4 countries can produce. I know there are Poles so irrationally scared of Russia that they want Nukes (not a bad idea), and I don't put is past the scheming Polacks (I should know I am one) to have secret plans to build nukes if shit hits the fan.

Russia just doesn't have the interest to invade Europe proper at the moment, it's not worth it for them. Would they take chuncks of Ukraine or Belarus if presented the oppertunity? Yes, but they aren't real countries anyway. I'm not so sure about the Baltics, sorry you guys might be fucked.

Actually, "Screw NATO" is a very conservative position. The liberals are the ones who advocate for intergovernmental organizations because they fulfill the ideal liberal view of the world as a cooperative one. Conservatives are more realist in nature (in the sense of IR theory) and would be more inclined to move away from such things.

That's not economics. That's not even real politics. For the third and final time, Trump is not talking about Poland, Trump is talking about weak Western European countries like Germany, on which he is 100% correct, they need to toughen the fuck up and pay for protection instead of whining. Poland is a reliable ally and provides space for bases and missile defense, and therefore American projection of power. If you seriously can't understand that and think alliances just boil down to people owing you money regardless of their role in the alliance you are genuinely retarded.

He's right. I remember when I did speech and debate, we argued on this topic and I read both sides.

The reasons to stay in NATO are far and few in between. It really doesn't serve any purpose that the UN doesn't serve, but it puts us in the place of being the world's policeman. It WOULD make more sense if Russia was allowed in, but since NATO Was a response to the cold war boogieman, I still don't think that will happen.

Trump is not a politician, is he? He is a businessman. If Poland wants to defend against Russia using our army, they should pay us our costs and reduce my tax burden. Paying their fair share and getting paid for our bases in Poland is not politics. It's empire building. Trump is not into empire building. You clearly can't into business. Losing money defending Yurop is losing money defending Yurop, even if Yurop thinks they pay their fair share. If Poland can't cover the costs of defending themselves, Poland should seek other alternatives, and maybe not aggravate the Russians. Or pay us. The politics you are talking about clearly got Yeb elected, did it not?

>Europe gets scared and realizes how much they need us.
>Offer to resume service at much higher price.

When you provide something free (or discounted), people get used to it and take it for granted. You have to pull back every once in a while to make people appreciate you and realize that they are willing to pay more for your service.

That's the art of the deal.

You have no threats because the US enforces a PAX America on Europe simply by having an enormous army and creating NATO.
Your world view is too static. While threats won't develop immediately, a country that has no military or outside protection won't last. This is a world of wolves not sheep, but under the US protection, you've forgotten about how dangerous the world really is.
This is part of the reason you're welcoming the Muslim invasion. You're blind to the world's dangers.

NATO is bound and constrained by treaties and partners. The US military would only serve the US. We put funding that goes towards troops in NATO countries towards defense projects, or outright cut it. Think of the amount of bases we have around the world, the troops stationed at various DMZ and peace enforcement zones, the staff needed to fund those bases. If we lower our involvement in NATO, we would be able to cut a lot of these programs, and put a lot of troops that are currently active into the reserves or possibly cut them outright. We just need to make sure we maintain a strong active military, while keeping them homebound and for defense of the US, not the Yuropooristanis.

Also, we are not paying "what we believe" to be our fair share, there is a NATO minimum for defense budget spending and the UK as well as some eastern European countries meet it. conservatives also like balanced budgets

i will answer with quotations

To me, fiscal conservatism means balancing budgets – not running deficits that the next generation can't afford. It means improving the efficiency of delivering services by finding innovative ways to do more with less. It means cutting taxes when possible and prudent to do so, raising them overall only when necessary to balance the budget, and only in combination with spending cuts. It means when you run a surplus, you save it; you don't squander it. And most importantly, being a fiscal conservative means preparing for the inevitable economic downturns – and by all indications, we've got one coming. —Michael Bloomberg[

Edmund Burke, in his Reflections on the Revolution in France, argued that a government does not have the right to run up large debts and then throw the burden on the taxpayer:

[I]t is to the property of the citizen, and not to the demands of the creditor of the state, that the first and original faith of civil society is pledged. The claim of the citizen is prior in time, paramount in title, superior in equity. The fortunes of individuals, whether possessed by acquisition or by descent or in virtue of a participation in the goods of some community, were no part of the creditor's security, expressed or implied...[T]he public, whether represented by a monarch or by a senate, can pledge nothing but the public estate; and it can have no public estate except in what it derives from a just and proportioned imposition upon the citizens at large.

It kills parasites because they will be forced to work hard. also it kills debt bubbles that were created by jews

>NATO has control over immigration policies
Europe is willingly letting itself get taken over, and there is nothing NATO can do about it. The biggest threat to Europe is no longer Russia, it's Europeans own stupid policies
